I'd like to make some kind of informed post about why I think printer X is better than printer Y, or at least be able to ask one of you folks what the differences are, but.....

I've been reading printer descriptions for hours and I can't seem to figure out what would be a good photo printing starting point. It's not like I'm making money on my shots, so I'm not inclined to spend huge sums of money on a printer. At the same time I'd like to get something that will last me a few years and survive changes in my level of skill as I progress.

One point of contention and confusion for me has been profiling and calibration. Can anyone help me out with some recommendations and some good guidance on printers?
