Greetings I am the proud owner of several POTN camera straps and now that I am also the proud owner of a brand new EF 300mm f/2.8L and a 1D Mark III I have always wondered if anyone has ever experienced a failure of the quick release buckle on the POTN camera strap. Perhaps I am being paranoid but should the quick release buckle ever fail I can not even begin to fathom what would happen…..
I was wonder if anyone has ever experienced any kind of un expected opening of the quick release on a POTN camera strap ?

I haven't experienced nor heard of anybody else's QR failing. But I guess that's not to say that it can't happen.

In my case, I only use the POTN strap on my cameras. I use the strap that came with my super telephoto lenses so that I won't have to worry about whether the POTN QR will work with the lenses or not.

The POTN camera strap are made for POTN by OpTech. I have never hear of the plastic QR failing, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen.
Now the 1DmkIII with a 300 f2.8 is a seriously heavy combination that would not be comfortable around your neck even if you were a NFL lineman. I guess my take is that that combination is heavy enough you likely woldn't be solely depending upon the camera strap anyway, but rather as only a backup. Definately I would try a E1 handstrap.

Yes, the 300 f/2.8 + 1DmkIII is relatively heavy and you wouldn't want to carry the combo around your neck but there's no reason you couldn't carry them with the strap (attached to the lens, not the camera) over your shoulder. :)

I think the strap itself is awesome, but if you're still concerned about reliability in the QR buckle I ran past this a few months back.

Its a nice little reinforcement idea, simple and fast. Plus its not permanent... and its definitely not expensive .

Hey thats a helluva good idea I wish I had thought of it

Please speak slowly and distinctly. I have a wife, AND a computer, I don't need any more confusion in my life.

I have the Optech (same strap) and if you look at the way the buckle is designed, the more weight pulls on it, the more the latches spread outwards, locking it even harder. No guarantees, but design seems pretty solid.

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having a QR buckle in the first place?

I've had some significant weight on my POTN strap this past week: 20D, BG-E2 grip, Newton Di400CR flash bracket, Quantum QFlash X5d-R flash with reflector and diffuser, Quantum D13w-R QTTL module and lenses up to an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (with the tripod ring removed, but with the hood).

I've had no problem with the quick releases, but I'm past the point of what I can comfortably hold hanging round my neck. The strap has only been used to steady the rig and provide a degree of protection against dropping it.

In the Optech USA strap reference chart (external link), the Pro Loop Strap is listed as taking "up to 7kg". That's clearly not a promise - but the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS is only 2550g without the hood. Allowing 1.3kg for the body, battery and hood (which is probably a bit much), you're still a little under 4kg.

1) its not a permanent fixture, so it can easily be removed with minimal damage to your wallet. and ...
2) I've never been in a situation where I've had to quickly release my neck strap and then reattach it soon thereafter. Either I use it that day or I don't.
