I "replaced" it with the Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 as I needed the speed for wedding work. Now, I can't say for certain if it's actual results or if it's in my head, when the tamron "gets it right" it's just as sharp as the 17-40, but it doesn't seem to give as high of a keeper rate. Maybe I'm just crazy.
