New monopod - head or no head?

What's the generally regarded opinion on monopod heads?

I have just purchased a new Manfrotto 679B (external link)monopod which has the double 1/4" - 3/8" thread so it will clip straight onto the camera. Its lighter than my tripod and more likely to be grabbed first when going out. I already have a 222 (external link)joystick head for my 190B tripod but have been looking at the 234RC (external link)which has the same sized quick release plate. (For Manfrotto read Bogen in the US)

Any thoughts on whether a simple tilt monopod head is of use?

For me it just got in the way. Now I don't use a head at all. Mostly use monopod for motor sports.

I think it really is dependant on what you shoot. I picked up the 679b a few weeks ago and have done some casual family shots with it, but mainly use it for sports. I have found that around the house a head would be nice but at no time have I felt I needed it for the sports shots.

I also have the 222 head (I use mine on my Velbon Sherpa Pro C/F tripod), and I've recently bought a Manfrotto 681B monopod and 234rc head to go with it (the qr plate is the same on both heads so saves having to screw/unscrew lenses or bodies off wither one), have not had chance to use the 234rc head on the monopod yet but it's a very sturdy piece of kit and I like the idea of being easily able to switch from horizontal to vertical framing.

This would be my choice with an arca swiss quick release plate on it.

You don't take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it.

I have the 679B and use the 3232 tilt head on it. If you are going to be shooting at different angles some type of head helps.

I have a Manfrotto monopod which I use with my 70-200 Sigma. Personally, I don't own a head for it. The lens has a ring on it for mounting a monopod. I just attach it and pivot. Save your money or put it into a filter instead.

Thanks for all the advice - I'm going to try without a head for the time being as the tripod and 222 head should cover most of those requirements!
