is there an internal 'odometer' for number of acuations for canon bodies?

if so, is there a way to figure it out? or is it only something canon service centre can do?

reason for asking, how do ppl keep track of this in order to claim in his sale ad "this camera has less approx 5000 actuations only!!" -- sounds really hard to ballpark even if i had to just guess. even then, when buying a used camera, how can it be proved if the guys lying ...? anyone can keep a body to look brand new and claim such low actuation counts heh

The 1 series bodies - at least prior to the 1DMk3 - can be accessed for shutter actuation count.
Other bodies are Canon accessable only.

Canon can access it on the bodies below the 1 series. I don't know if you could send it in for a cleaning and shutter count or not..ie whether they'd outright tell you. I know they did provide the click count on my former and now sold broken 10D.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I just use the number of the pic on the card. The only problem with that being photos taken while usb'd to a computer do not count. So add another hundred or so to mine.

But that only works for your own camera. Unfortunately, Canon has chosen to make shutter counts invisible to us folk who can’t spring for a series 1 camera even though the data is clearly available. I know it’s a product differentiation thing but it seems that a picayune thing. It’s not as if actual shutter actuations is not going to add hundreds of $$ to the value of a camera and would greatly benefit the used camera body consumers. If I were to get a used body, I would totally discount the # of pics the seller is claiming. It’s just too easy to set to whatever you want.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Providing that you never resets the serial number, which I had never done so. How bout the serial number photo? Let's say your last photo number is 878-7847, I think it means that you have taken 77 847 image. Anyone can verify?

Since my 30D was almost out of warranty I decided to send it in for a cleaning. I included a note asking for the shutter actuation count and we'll see if they do it.

I just checked the online status and it's completed but not shipped yet. I should have it back in the next few days and I'll let you know if they gave me the information or not.

Using a memory card out of another camera can screw up the count unless you format it first.......I have gotten into the habit of always formating any card I put in.
How do you get the total count from the 1 series?

Since you've cut and pasted this same reply 3 times that I've seen today I'll bite for the second time. No, that is not an accurate way to count actuations.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.
