should I put the lightroom catalog in my external drive?

No. I wouldn't. Definitely not on a network drive but an external would likely be a slow bottleneck. It would of course be more than fine to backup to an external drive which is what I do. My catalog(s) is on my Data drive.

Yes, unless you use a seperate drive for your data from your OS like I do. Then put it on the data drive.

I keep my lightroom library on my c: drive along with my images.

I am lucky enough to have 2 PCs' in the house. The first runs LR, backs up images and catalogue every day to the second, which also backs up to an external drive. The backup runs in the background (assuming both PCs' are tuned on).

I download CF cards to first PC, and the system (with low cost software) takes care of evrything else.
