Ordering my 10D tomorrow morning (YEAH!!) and I need to get a tripod to go along with it, but I'm not really familiar with the different brands. I've been using a cheapie for a couple years and figured I might as well pick up a decent one with the cam. Anything decent I can get for ~$200?

Regards,
Brandon

was asking myself the same question. Now my decision is fixed. I will go for the Giottos MT-8170. its the carbon version and will be sold for 269$ at B&H. the aloy version is about 140$

regardless of the camera, most important thing to think about is the total wight the tripod will hold, if you're carrying it for long time (think Carbon ones if your budget allowsit), and what kind of shooting you're doing the most (for macrophotography for instance you will for sure need more flexibility).
Only ou can decide which one fits you the most. but one advice : we all think at the begining that spending quite a bit on money on a tripod iskind of waste of money while you can save for other stuff (what stuff : LENSES of course  ). do not get fooled, your tripod will follow you for long long time. and quality really matters.
go manfrotto or Gitzo, GO carbon if you can
regards
Khalid

Manfrotto (external link) and Gitzo are some of the big names in tripod land. I have a Manfrotto tripod, the 055 DB (I think the equivalent US model number is 3001 BN). The 10D is steady like a rock on it.

My tripod is not very light, if you want a really light but good tripod you may want to get a carbon fibre tripod, but they are way more expensive than metal ones (I paid € 165, which is about US$ 200 for it here, and the carbon fibre version was € 500 - US$ 600).
