Re the focus, well I havent got all of the cricket in the pic, the end of the back legs and the tips of the antena are missing, but if I had got them in the whole photo, they would not have been in focus. It very much depends on how big the insect is and how much you get in the frame. Plus of course, I mostly use my 60mm macro which I find much better with regard to that, than my 100mm macro funnily enough (I just find I work much better with the 60mm for some reason).
I almost always use F11, which is a good all-rounder I have found, but if you take a look at my weevil shots that I have just uploaded, not all of the body is completely in focus because it was a bit larger than the cricket. Hope that throws some light on it for you
