The other day I noticed red and black ants both farming aphids on sedum spectabile plants fairly close to each other- just separated by a low wall. Yesterday when i went to photograph some aphid farming a full scale battle was going on on top of the wall. The ants both had skirmish lines with scouts making a dash for the other line every now and then.
Definitely not a friendly encounter. When I checked a little later the red ants seemed to have overrun the black ants position but an hour after that and everything seemed back to normal with both the black and red ants back farming their aphids.
