How about the latest version of photoshop elements? I went to a seminar recently, the instructor recommended Corel Paint Show Pro (external link), it's way cheaper than Photoshop and does pretty much the same thing.

Get CS3 by all means. CS3 now lets you process jpeg images in the raw module, you\'ll love it.

I've never used it, but i'm told it's good. Download the trial version and try it out for yourself :) Let us know how it is too :)

If you are a student, teacher or parent of a student (:D) you can get CS3 Extended for $290 here (external link) or for $380 bundled with Lightroom.

I'm not sure though if you have to be in the US to qualify.

A friend of mine uses Paint Shop Pro with great success, I've never tried it myself.

I'd look at one of these two...either one should be more than capable enough.
Photoshop Elements 5 - ~$100
Corel Paint Shop Pro XI ~$70

Have a look at Gimp. It is a photoshop look-a-like and is free. I tried it a year or so ago and it worked just fine.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Photoshop Elements 5 is great. I use it for my RAW post-production. The academic version is the same as the non-academic at a lesser price.

I'm very pleased with Photoshop Elements 5. It has a very good tool set which covers most of the basic photo editing needs. Obviously CS3 is much more powerful but then it is nearly 10 times the price.
Also, if you are shooting RAW it is ideal as the 5.02 update includes a version of ARC 4.1.
