Should be great for outdoors. Do you have a telephoto to bring though? Some of the animals at the SD zoo (i.e. Tigers) can sometimes be pretty far off.

Try it before your trip. My brand new 17-40 failed tonight with Error 1 (bad communication to lens). It's not dirty contacts, and re-seating didn't help. I took a few shots with it, and it was fine. Failed in the middle of trying to shoot a balloon festival tonight. Turns out it didn't make too much difference, as the winds kept the balloons from flying. My first bad lens :(

I just have some error 01 today with my Macro 100mm and 36mm extension tube ....so I took the extension tube out and re-acttach the 100mm macro ...and it's just work fine .

Did you try anything else with that lens like Teleconvert or Extension tube cause the failure ?

Nope, just straight to the mk-III. I just tried it with my XTi, and could get it to fail. Put on my 1d and can't get it to work. My 70-200 is working just fine with the 1d. So, now I'm not positive what the problem is. I got nearly 100 shots off with the 17-40 before it failed(1d only).

i went to the des moines zoo a few weeks back and my 17-40 didn't even make it out of the bad, my 70-200 didn't even have enough reach a lot of the time.

All better. Even though it worked in my XTi, and looked clean to me, I went ahead and cleaned off the lens contacts(just like the camera told me to do :) ). Worked just fine this morning:

The lens worked very well.

And, I agree with above. Last time I went to the zoo, all I used was my 70-200 + 1.4 TC. A couple of pictures could have used a wider lens, but not required.

I love my 17-40! Perhaps the lens that wowed me the most first time I used it. Sadly, I seldom do use it now. It's even been relegated to my second bag. I just don't shoot wide all that often. Hopefully, now with my Domke F1x, it will come with me more and see some more use. I gotta tell ya, I love seeing the shots from that thing!

I found it too limiting for my needs and got a 17-55 aswell. 40mm ended a little short, there was no IS and the f/4 was restricting at times.

It makes a nice landscape lens, but I can't imagine it being overly useful at the zoo however.
