MK3 first effort

bought the camera for tennis but couldnt resist trying the MPE65 on it. First obvious advantages are you can get more of a larger insect in the frame, the viewfinder is clearer and though I havent tried it the live lcd view could make chasing hovers in flight easier. The only disadvantages so far I can find are that it is a bit heavier albeit nicely balanced and the lcd screen doesnt do the images justice. I will have a lot of experimenting to get my flash lighting correct (havent tried high ISO yet) - I had a lot of failures with the bees but then they are pretty tough. Anyway without further ado...

absolutely amazing! love macro insect shots, is the MPE65 the lens you used for this? if not, what lens please?

absolutely stunning RM. Bugger the tennis keep it for macro

Your springtails look really nice! I think the Mark III's image handling and dynamic range really help do the pictures justice. Also, the sharpness is just perfect.

yes the MPE65, a fine lens for higher magnification. You can get much the same results using tubes and a normal macro lens but it is less hassle and some would argue it has slightly better resolution. Should be good with your 5D as the FF sensor would allow even a Dragonfly full body I would think?

probably have to if the AI SERVO issues discussed elsewhere prove to be true! I will have some idea tomorrow as we have a tennis match, weather permitting, though frankly it would be nonsense for me to reach definite conclusions when I have no experience of 1 series cameras. If there is a problem Canon will do a recall/firmware and meanwhile my beloved MPE will manually focus all day long without a hitch

The Digital Photo Professional software supplied with the MK3 seems far superior to the version I had with the 20D - now I can sharpen properly in RAW.

Should be the same as what's available from the Canon Website (v3.02 for DPP and v2.02 for EU).

Congrats on the 1D Mark III, I'm very envious!!! The images look good, very good, plenty of detail the the IQ looks silky smooth. If I had been able to get the Mark III, I had planned to get rid of flash altogether and shoot high ISO (1600) and natural light, now that you have the camera, do you think it's feasible. I'd also be interested to see what you think of the live view feature, although I won't be around to hear future reports after Monday, at least for sometime.

1 series bodies are heavier, but they do feel firm in the hand. The older 1 series bodies are even heavier than your Mark III Have you tried the Sigma 150 on it

Excellent series RM - esp like the Springtails. Be interested in your opinion on the the camera for macro use compared to the 20D when you've tried it a while. Get the impression it might score on detail at higher ISOs.

Great shots RM! You may not be used to the 1D body yet but this first series already shows that in your hands we can expect some stunning images! Keep them coming!
I am not quite ready to take the plunge myself.
