I think it looks pretty good for a first portrait but there's something a little strange about it. It looks like it might have been over-sharpened or is grainy perhaps.

Good job, though.

I also agree with the oversharpening. That's what I first noticed.

Hi thanks for the reply, I did sharpen it a little, I will try a little less next time.

Thanks

hope you don't mind - but I just had to give this a try!

Used noise ninja to soften the grain and then did an effect similar to midnight sepia. Then just for fun added some color behind her (same hue as the dress she's wearing).

Kinda cute, eh? :)

After looking at the EXIF data for this image I would recommend you shoot portraits in manual mode, as well as 100 ISO. You shot this in Auto which automatically cranked up the ISO to 400, that is why you have the grainy over sharpened look with some blown highlights.
I would also recommend you stop down your aperture to at least f8 if not f11.

Here is the EXIF data:
Camera Make: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL
Image Date: 2007:05:20 14:50:51
Flash Used: Yes (Auto)
Focal Length: 50.0mm
CCD Width: 17.00mm
Exposure Time: 0.010 s (1/100)
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO equiv: 400
White Balance: Auto
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: program (Auto)

Just another shutterbug.

Sure I can, Mark! I'll do it this afternoon - I've got a minor hospital procedure to do this morning. :)
