This just goes to show that you can get surprisingly good results with relatively modest equipment. Don't get drawn in by the megapixels race though. Once you get to around 5-6mp then the sensor size is the more important criterion. The G7 to a certain extent falls into this trap of cramming 10 megapixels to fulfill marketing hype rather than picture quality, and as a result, noise will be a problem at higher iso levels. Having said that, the sensor IS bigger than that in the Ixus60 so you should theoretically get a little better resolution. Coupled with image stabilisation and a decent zoom range, the G7 is a very nice compact. Good luck with it.

Should arrive tommorow after a delay in the delivery!

I know what you mean about the marketing ploy of using megapixel count as a selling point for cameras. But I mean to shoot most of my pictures below ISO400, which should keep noise to a minimum. The G7 above ISO400 is an absolute disaster apparently, but I never really have the need to go above 200.
I just hope for larger prints.

Well my G7 arrived today, and it has exceeded my expectations. Here are a few shots taken today. Please note though, I have not really become that accustomed to the manual controls yet.

I am yet to identify this Spider. It really was small though, and so I was left dumfounded when the G7 focused in on it.

I look forward to your results and comments when you get your G7. It is a camera I am considering as an intro to matters digital.

Roy.

It really is a terrific camera. Solid build, and reassuringly heavy in the hand. The 6x Optical Zoom is brilliant, and can be used in sync with the macro. I managed to capture a shot of a butterfly from over a metre away, which really is a nice addition to what I am used to.

I know it is not a Macro, but here is a link to a shot I took this evening. Clicky (external link)

I am not usually one for shooting that many landscape shots, but the G7 may just change that.

If you want to know anything more, please ask.

Wow!

Thanks for the brilliant comment Alex!

DSLR will certainly be the next step. One of the reasons for getting the G7 was that it is one of few compacts (if it can really be called a 'compact'. . . dwarfs my ixus) that can also take lenses. There are various Macro lenses available from specialist sites which is a huge bonus for me.

Once again, thanks for the great reply. :D

Thanks!

Second day with my G7. Not such a good day, but managed a few pics.

This is my first attempt at altering the shutter speed. I am slowly getting the hang of these manual controls.

Hmmm, that sensor on your G7 is showing up my S3, I fear, as those 100% crops are pretty damned sharp. Some very good shots here too.
