Shots of Volucella zonaria enjoying a marguerite flower.The flower centre is 2.5cms in dia. You can see it has a forked tongue in some of the shots. Last shot is Sphaerophoria scripta on a similar flower for size comparison.

I find that species quite timid and easily spooked by my approach, she's obviously gotten used to you.

Lovely hover Brian, I just saw one of these today in the garden but it didn't hang around, It landed briefly and when I moved to get a closer look it was off :-( They are noticeably recognisable in flight.
