In an exceedingly foul mood after I fried my hard drive:evil: , it took a day or so before I was over my frustration, enough at least to put a good face on. Over the weekend, my friend Bernie popped by to harass me. He left with my hard drive under his arm, muttering that he knew a genius computer geek who could fix anything and that my drive did not sound like much of a problem at all. Right. Since I had already paid one data recovery expert, I wasn't inclined to pay again. But he told me it would only cost $100. and that there would be no charge unless I got my completed image file. I refused to get my hopes up.

Today I have spent the day going through and organizing the photoshop images he salvaged. One of the added benefit is that I got my work in progress files. Since the file/directory structure of the archives is destroyed, I don't think there will be my new stacks that I run out of archives... but a minor price to pay. ;)

This is one of the images that I had compiled, Prior to frying my drive, I cleaned up the pronounced halos. I think I got most of them. It's still easier for me to see them on a print. Hope you enjoy anyway.

These strange flowers belong to Sempervivum arachnoidum.

Irwin

Sounds like you save a lot of work for yourself Irwin, I would think that's a good advert for backing up for all of us:-) Lovely shot and glad you got most of your work back.

Thank you Brian for you kind thoughts. The funny part is that I had already given up and made peace with the loss. I never expected to see the images again, so it was a pure gift.

When I first posted about my fried drive, I did so as a warning as to the fragile nature of digital data. We work so hard to take and process our shots that can be lost in an instant. What is probably the most important part, I relied on a backup system that I never tested. I did not know there was a problem with my backup configuration until I needed the backup. Of course, it was too late by then.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, Alby.

Thank you RM. You are so right about Bernie..a true prince and good friend. With some gifts, you can only mutter a heartfelt thanks and look for an opportunity to reciprocate down the road.

Nice picture Irwin - I wondered if I was being a bit extreme saving all my pictures onto an external hard drive and onto cd as well - perhaps not! Pleased to hear you salvaged most of your work :)

Hiya Irwin,

Excellent shot, your ability to make even a messy Flower Cluster look beautiful amazes me.

And now from that mine of useless information!!

Did you know that ' Sempervivums ' were considered sacred to Jupiter in Roman and Thor in Nordic mythology. The flower was said to resemble the beard of the God ??

Jovibarba Iovis barbam equates to Jupiter's Beard

Cheers for now
Mark

Thanks for you kind comments, Dave. I couldn't agree more with what you are doing. By the time I get done, I will have invested significant money and untold hours. Having backups on both external hard drive and cd does not seem like overkill.
