Those openings you've seen have all basically been doing just about what you're doing now, though right?
...
You may like what you're doing now, but can you see doing it for the next 50 years, until you reach retirement age?

Not quite what I am/was doing now. I was the network engineer for a municipal broadband ISP. Full-time, building out, customer support, whole nine yards...

For the past year, I have been working with a distributor/consulting company on side projects. I've been able to go out to local school districts and cities and analyze their needs, design them a wireless network, slap a price on it. Then if they go with it, they have contractors that install everything and maintain it.

My favorite project so far was driving around a city of 35,000 doing RF studies to locate which street lights to mount radios onto for the police/fire/public works wireless network.

When each project is different, and in a different location - it is pretty fun. There have been a few projects outside of the USA, but I have had to turn them down due to school...

I can't imagine entering todays job market without a degree in your field of interest. Even a basic BS degree shows that you are committed to complete what you start. 40 to 50 years is a long time to fight off those degreed individuals that may threaten your future.

Which is why I am going to attempt to get my degree...
Though, I would really like to take my own company and actually start doing more with it.

I was self-employed for 20 plus years, it worked out great for me.

I was self employed for 12 years, had a software contracting company. It was a struggle. I was small enough to be a friendly everyone knows everyone else kind of place but not big enough to bid for the money making contracts. It came to a choice, either expand greatly or sell. I sold.

YAY!!! My Ilford paper came today! Now I am able to use my new printer (ip6700)

AWESOME!!!! 4x6 in seconds! Ilford paper is really nice... I am loving this printer!

Takes some work dealing with color and paper profiles - and I am still working on that - but even my rough drafts look good.

I haven't read back through today's posts to see if it's already been posted or not, but today is Permie's 1-year anniversary on POTN.

It deserves recognition, especially in light of her nearly 15,000 posts. (that's a 15 with three zeroes after it!!!).

Congratulations, Permie.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

I had a guy come up to me in the park one day, I had my 1DsmkII and 70-200/2.8. He asked me what camera I had so I held it up to show him. He then went on to tell me that he was a graduate of Brooks Institute a few years ago but decided photography was not his thing. I thought to myself, if you can't look at a rig and identify it then you made the right choice. I'm thinking, the camera body has Canon in big letters and theres a white lens attached.

Ive heard of simmilar stories but you put not being able to id a camera next to what i have found in the uk (at the same level of education) of not being to take a shot in focus !:(

i have no hope of gettin intoo anything that studio work as it is *pulls yucky face* at the rate im going ill be working as a assistant for many years before i get any ware and of course there is no photography compition in lincolnshire and i carnt aford to travel any further afeild IE to london cause of the £££. I dont wanna spend my life working behind a desk

anyway moan over
