what frustrates me is that I'm supposed to leave next Friday for 10 days and my dentist is notorious for NOT getting me in in a timely fashion...

Tell him it's an emergency. Don't give him an option.

Definitely call the one on call. They will probably come in tomorrow or first thing Tuesday.

This thread has a really nice explanation of how to properly expose white clothing (or anything white, for that matter). If you haven't read it, it's worth a read.

Cool! When you get there, give him your sob story and I'm sure he'll take care of you. Once he's there, he might as well finish the job.

Okay Yoda...at great personal risk to my reputation (and sanity) here are your box shots (the gallery isn't public because my rep can only take so much )...the last shot was with both tc's and I missed focus a bit (sorry) but it was so bright outside MF was really hard...and inside it was too dark to do a reasonable shoot.

since you didn't want raw (see, I remembered from before), I shot on jpeg L, used "neutral" picture style, iso 500 (because I needed enough light for all the tc's so to keep it the same, I just used iso 500 across the board)...and various apertures (shot in M) & I've left the exif's in tact. The camera was in bright light but the box was in the shade (my yard wasn't big enough for both to be in the same light)....I've left the originals so you can download them at 100%.

The first three are with the 400mm alone and AF. The second 2 are with the 1.4x tc and AF. The next two are with the 2x tc and MF and the last one is with both tc's...

Nice boxes too, I was expecting a Canon box or something but I like the twist you put on it and can most definitely see the point. :)

You actually did not miss the focus in the last one, believe it or not! There is a little bit of up/down shake blur, but I would not doubt that a 1120mm lens is tremendously challenging to hold 100% stable even on a tripod. (MLU, long lens technique, etc.etc. all needed and I am sure it will be a challenge for me to master too). Good thing is, there is no side to side shake blur so I can evaluate sharpness and.. I am impressed. That is one fearsome lens. Even with the 2x TC it hardly takes a hit. I notice a slight IQ hit going from no TC to 1.4x, but from 1.4x to 2x is hardly any worse, so I might as well use a 2x for extreme reach when I need it.

I like the 2nd one! It reminds me so much of one situation where we were leaving a photo shoot, and one of the photogs pulls out....A CAMERA PHONE to take our group shot and I'm like "What? 3 photogs and six DSLRs between us and you have to use THAT?"

Image quality was awful too :p

A Dremel, a rubber hammer and a tank of propane...sounds like the perfect Stooge dental kit!
