you do know you have to remove a pc from the cardboard box

A-yup. To tell the truth, my laptop doesn't get used very often (I don't think I've even powered it on since April). But, my desktop sees constant use, and has been powered on almost constantly, 24/7, since December 2003.

Yours has been the best advice so far. I may seriously consider the iMac. And to remember how we laughed so hard at the iMac when it first came out nearly ten years ago.

not a problem yoda its a carefull desicson and can be a expensive mistake how ever with the ability to hide and jump programs at the press or a squeeze of the mouse alows you to do more on less space

I might consider the Mini first: still keep my Windows as a primary workstation but start moving more stuff to the Mini. Just that I'd hate to have to switch between two keyboards and mice...

I just bought a 20" iMac, and it's a very nice machine. I briefly considered the 24", but decided that it was too big for the intended use. It sits on a table between the two chairs my wife and I use in the family room, and the bigger iMac would have seemed more like a room divider.

My 'good' Mac is the MacPro. It's connected to two (2) 23" Apple displays. That's in the office.

I've pretty well eliminated all the PCs except for the one I do my business work on. I try not to go online with it any more than absolutely necessary.

i love my mac the 24 inch imac is huge if you can try one before you decided that you want dual screens i work as well on my 24 inch imac as i can on the dual screen windows machine that at college

and i feel more relaxed while doing it strange

I'm also thinking of switching (after I had the pleasure of getting acquainted with Mac when my wife bought a MacBook), and the 24 inch iMac does look like a very nice option. I just don't like that you're not able to choose a matte screen. I'm hoping they'll bring out that option.

Too bad you're not closer. I have a 1G mini I'm not using, and I'd let it go very cheap. My experience in shipping the camera to you has me convinced it would be cheaper just to send you a check to buy one there.

Thanks Chief :) :) :)

Historical note: I was an ex-owner of a 1.25Ghz/256MB/40GB Mini. At that time I was busy trying to do all kinds of wierdo exotic stuff with it so never got along with it well, eventually sold it.

Would probably opt for a dual core these days.

Suddenly the idea of wholesale migration sounds good. Since I will always have to run a Windows workstation anyway (tell Apple to call me when Visual Studio .NET and MS SQL Server/Analysis Services/MDX run natively, or tell my boss to send me back to networking), why not migrate to an iMac, then simply run Windows in Parallels. Everything that needs Win32 runs in Parallels, everything that doesn't ie. Firefox, Skype, Eudora, runs in OSX. That way when, not if, Windows crashes, the damage is limited.

I was already well on my way to migrating back to Mac when Vista came out. That pushed me over the edge. If I'm going to have to give Mr. Gates that much control over my life just to stay current in the Windows world, I'll pass. If Apple pulls the same crap with 10.5, I don't know what I'll do.

Similar to my reasons, I am not fond of Vista. It was bad enough getting used to XP and its bugs, now I have to do it all over again.

If Apple does it....well guess you gotta get used to UNIX then.

I've run BSD UNIX for more than 10 years and it feels as comfortable as a pair of old jeans. And it's reliable, too... I have literally left servers running unattended for years, and they get pounded each and every day. The only problem is: It doesn't run ANYTHING I need on a desktop.......

Moooorning everyone...I'm off soon to the "on call" dentist who'll probably charge me my firstborn just to smooth my broken crown down (enough to "hold me over" for my own dentist) on a holiday. sigh...I DO hate dental issues...

TD, that dremel is sounding better and better...

Claire, very lovely shots...that pano is fabulous!

Yoda, you're welcome. And we only have one 2x tc. We don't find that we use it too often (I DO use my 1.4 very often though).

Just say the word and I'll be there! Seriously, though, I hope your dental trip is going well (I think you're there right now).

Oh fine....tick all that apply:

[] I'm incompetent
[] I'm clueless
[] I have no idea what viruses or spyware are
[] I do not know the holy incantations
[] I'm stupid
[] I can't run a Windows box and should go back to selling fish
[] Go back to selling fish anyway

Yoda, just because people have different experiences than you and share them doesn't mean they are commenting on you or your skills. They're just trying to share other perspectives. There are other perspectives.

Oh, quick question before I head off to sleep....

Are the iMacs TOTALLY silent - as in no fans? I know the Mac Minis are.

Hmmm... After seeing T.D.'s reply, I went back and looked at this again. Was this aimed at me?

I've been working in the IT field for 22 years now. None of the above apply. I do know what the hell I'm doing... ;)

I know the feeling, I am getting ready to completely migrate my laptop to Linux (It is all I ever use on there) but I hate the fact that I don't have a good way to color calibrate my monitor (not that I do in windows as it is a a laptop). I mean I can edit on an emergency basis with gimp and bibble or one of the free raw convertors but still. For that reason I keep XP on my desktop.

My main impetus for getting rid of windows on my laptop is that I am sick of Cisco Clean access for windows taking for ever to let me online etc while I am at school. I also don't like them requiring me to have norton antivirus, which I don't like as much as what usually use.

Anyways, I was bored and class is about to start so I must go, but that is my 2 cents on the whole thing.

(change "I" to "Yoda" to get the version I meant)

Night all!
