What is the other one? Those little guys are cute...saw them when he posted it the other day. Little touch of CA going on in that first shot.

Shetlands. They are basically 'downsized' versions of collies with similar intelligence and charm, they even look similar and come in almost the same colors. I have one at my ancestral home.. very nice animal and definitely one of a kind :)

So.....enter VMWare Fusion. Windows-in-Mac and even Windows apps directly on the Mac desktop. w00t!!

(I know about Parallels, just that Fusion recently went 'production' and VMWare has lots of clout aroud here, thanks to Tommy's awesome VMWare advice to me earlier this year).

I've been using Parallels for a few months, and it's great. Fusion is supposed to be even better, although I don't remember why:o. Leo LaPorte was discussing it on his radio show a couple weeks ago, and I wasn't paying close attention.

I'm seriously considering replacing my Windows machine with another Mac. We're finally getting a Mac store here in the desert, and Best Buy is now selling the entire line (they've had Minis for a while). For the last 7 years, the closest stocking dealer was at least 100 miles away.

Order is returning to the universe.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

I never realized it till now, but Shetlands and Shelties are the same thing.

They're beautiful little dogs. And smart?!!!

They are very similar products.. at first glance I figured they were identical!

From what I've been reading Fusion is faster, and allows you to launch multiple virtual computers at the same time. Useful for me as I may run FreeBSD (x86) and Windows XP at the same time on OSX. I know OSX is built on a FreeBSD core (I've been carping about that since the day they hired jkh. Hardcore FreeBSD veterans need no introduction to jkh and his 14 cats*.) but the differences are substantial enough I might like to run FreeBSD itself.

(* cat count may be out of date.)

Fusion also allows your virtual machines (VM's) to use both cores of the processor at once, hence performance is better.

I kinda like familiar stuff, I have been using VMWare Server ever since Tommy mentioned it in the last RRTP thread as the solution to some of my problems, so Fusion is more of the same good thing.

Shetland Sheepdogs vs Shetland Ponies.

You'd put a saddle on a small dog?

When I was a young'un, one of our neighbors had a Saint Bernard. My brother and I used to ride that dog like it was a horse. If we had a saddle for it, we would have put it on him...

I think that was what he was saying. I believe he said that Parallels didn't support multi-processors.

I had never heard of a Shetland beyond the pony type...Shelties are familiar though. Learn something new every day here.

Being from England, we have Shetland ponies, and border collies.

We know the difference... ;)

We had a Shetland pony... gosh that boy was horrible. Lived to be 27-28'ish... Very stuborn...

One time my Dad was trying to get him to do something, and he sorta "wrestled" with the pony... and the both fell down on the ground :-D --- the pony respected Dad after that and never gave him grief again :-D

Hey, Wool! You forgot your helmet and goggles! Even static-line the wind's something fierce, and some Meanie Head might drop a piece of their gear.

Now if only the right people would read the LLs...as yet another noob was informed by one of the directors of misinformation that a 300mm grows to 480 the second you strap it to your 40D.

Which DM? I wouldn't mind banning someone for sheer, incurable, stupidity.

Maybe since this is RRTP I can share one lesson I learned last weekend without all the nuts coming out of the woodwork.

I couldn't decide what to take, so I basically threw together a full kit and in a very rare occurrence, actually carried my Computrekker. I normally shoot from a Domke F802 or a half-full Orion Trekker (top compartment holds non-photo gear) and carry a very light load. So I decided to see what would happen if I carried half my gearlist.

Turns out that this is a profoundly bad idea. On Day Zero, we arrived at our location after driving the whole day, just in time to shoot the sunset. I got a few shots, the sunset wasn't very spectacular (well, weather conditions can be like that), but as I was juggling 3 bodies (40D, 5D, Elan7) I came to the realization that I was spending all my time deciding on wtf to use, and configuring it for use, than I actually was shooting. Not to mention the Computrekker was big and heavy. So after really crappy sunset and even crappier rabbit ("Hey that's a rabbit, let's pull out the long lenses even though it's 1/15 ISO 1600 after sunset"), we went to eat and review the pics.

I wasn't able to abandon the gear, but I made up my mind that since I was here to test the 40D, I would. It was really tough to put the 5D back in the bag and make it stand by, but I did. I decided to shoot with JUST the 40D and 10-22, to go back to basics, unless a situation clearly warranted use of something else (friend took the chopper ride, I stayed on the ground but used 70-200 to get him taking off).

So I started day 1 with just the 40D/10-22 and a Cokin holder. For that matter I ended the day with the same rig, only changing lenses once.

The results speak for themselves..I did some of my best work ever.
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=375479

Needless to say, on my next expedition, I'm going back to basics. For landscape missions the UWA takes priority, events: standard zoom, airshow: long tele. For situations I can't make up my mind it's just 3 lenses instead of half a dozen lenses and 3 bodies. If I do carry a backup body it will be dedicated to backup only. I figure there was a reason why I like the smaller bags: it deliberately forces me to pack light and that yields better results.

Discipline! Normally I take most everything in the F-1x, but use only 3, maybe 4 lenses on the 2 bodies. It's which 3-4 lenses that's unpredictable. Oh, I know I'll use the 24-70 and 70-200 a whole bunch so they start out on the bodies, but whether the other 2 will include the 15-30, the 100-400 or the 90 macro (as the most common choices are), or something else altogether is anybody's guess. I don't go out determined to use everything, but I do like to have the lens for the job if I see something that demands a certain treatment. The F-802's my lightweight travel bag though. 2 bodies, 15-200 mm in zooms, TCs, filters and batteries and (if needed) the Libretto).

A very similar sensation I am sure.:lol::lol:

When I go on safari...I usually take a full complement of toys with me...including almost always...3-4 bodies...1.6x, 1.3x, FF and film....plus a full spectrum of glass. Usually when I set out...I have somewhat of a specific agenda...so I mount glass to bodies accordingly...the 20D is usually ready for macro work...the mk2n is usually set for either the 70-200, 300 or 400...and the 1Ds and 7Ne get a 24-70 or 24-105 on one and a 16-35 or 17-40 on the other.

Pretty much my workflow, too.
