We are going to a balloon festival Saturday! YAY!
After seeing all the Oregonian's photos of balloons, I am so excited to go shoot some myself. :D :D

Alright, can't wait to see your shots.

Cool Cat!

Get there early and be prepared to move fast! You need a wide angle and something with a little reach. Have fun!

Thanks for the pointers, TD. Any other bits of advice?? I've never even seen a balloon in real life before.

It starts at 7AM, and it's an hour drive from here. but it will be worth it.

Did you use flash at all??

Get there at 6:45 at the latest. No flash. Be prepared for some flame shots.

My best advice is to be bold and act like you own the place. Seriously. Ballooners are generally extremely nice and want to help you get great shots. Walk right up to them and shoot inside the balloons, etc.

I was tentative the first time I went. Later, not so much. And it definitely paid off.

Cat, you can see some of my shots here (external link). I think you have to go to page 2 before they start. Maybe it will give you some ideas.

Oh yeah, definitely take the polarizer. You will need it.

We were thinking about it until we checked the weather...30F at night is just too cold for these old bones. We are taking food for sandwiches along the way and snackies in the hotel room...it's vacation so no bad calories...right?;):D

Thanks TD, I've looked at that gallery of yours quite a few times. (I even left a comment on one a while back ;) ) I love those shots, and if I get anything even remotely close to any of those I'll be happy.

I know TD already said get their a bit earlier, just repeating :) It is waaaaay worth it to get there when still dark. GREAT flame potential!

Thanks Cat.

There will probably be a lot of people so you may have to resort to getting closeups and odd angles until they take off. It takes about 20 minutes to fill the balloons with cold air on the ground and about less than a minute to get the hot air in. So once you see them taking shape on the ground, things really move fast.

Thanks! The sun was just coming up (hadn't broken the horizon yet) so it was fairly dark. However, I metered for the flame and thus the rest of it was dark. I like how it turned out.
