So, to cheer myself up, I am off to Amazon to pull the trigger on Tammy :)

Terri - I know someone who is selling a Tammy. Might be cheaper - just in case you haven't pulled the trigger yet. :)

I need advice.

By mid October when we go back, I will have spent 3.5 months here in the states - far longer than I had prepared for when we left. That's a quarter of the year without a tripod or flash. :( I am getting a litle bit stir crazy, but don't want to spend a fortune on gear I already own. The BIGGEST thing that is bothering me is not having a tripod because I use one a lot for macro. But I'm torn...

Should I suck it up and buy another (3rd!) manfrotto that is strong enough to hold my heaviest camera/lens combo? This would likely cost between 2 and 3 hundred dollars. That's what I had wanted to spend on a 3rd off camera flash...

or

Should I buy a lighter weight (cheaper) manfrotto that can't hold my heaviest camera/lens combo but can manage the camera/macro lens + tubes to use just for this next 2 months? Does anyone know which manfrotto this might be?

sigh...

I'd say look at what you'd be mostly using the tripod for. Since you want it more for the macro work, then I'd recommend the lighter one.

I don't know which one to recommend. I have the 190ProB, which suits for everything that I do, but is fairly heavy.

Athena, what does your orange signature mean?

Morning Kody.
All the orange words in my signature mean the same thing in different cultures. It's a physical greeting. To do it, you place the palms of your hands together and bring them to your chest whilst bowing your head slightly (this is how you'd greet someone of equal status anyway). In very basic terms it means you are acknowledging that my inner light and yours are of the same essense and in that, connected, regardless of our earthly beliefs.

I would say that if you have one at home that holds you heavier stuff, Get one that will do your macro work. That is unless you anticipate needing the heavier one while you are here.

I just love my Gitzo Explorer GT2540EX Tripod for macro work. I use my 3-way head with it and can set up for a shot at almost any conceivable angle, from right at ground level and up. It is also rated for up to a 300 f2.8 lens mounted on my camera. I think it is a bit pricier than what you are looking at though.

Otherwise, what about a good lightweight tripod, one that would hold most of what you would travel with. It would be very portable, and you would be less likely leave it at home and be in the situation you are. If I was to do lots of plane traveling, this would be a type of tripod I would be looking for.

If I were you, I'd get the more expensive one. That's only because if were you, I'd be spending your money. If I were spending MY MONEY, I'd get permission from my wife to get the lighter tripod.

She is the wife, so she doesn't need permission. lol
