Why not practice somewhere else first, perhaps haggle over the morning coffee or when buying the newspaper :D

Just go for it!! Best piece of advice I can give is to not show that you really want it and need it right there and then.

Yeah, I know. That would defeat the purpose of haggling.

Try buying from the internet.

(typed this right after he read the other posts)

Like it has been stated, they have to cover their overhead, so matching a multi million dollar business isnt going to make them a large profit.

The only way to find out is to ask, you never know.

Hmmm, cannot use the internet? But yet you are here asking how to get internet prices at a store?

1) You can use Paypal, which last time I checked is on the internet, and a lot of stores take as payment
2) You have already found low online prices
3) You are on this internet forum,

There are obviously ways to buy online to get your lens at a very good savings shipped within 2 days, thus matching your prior requirements, but you still insist you cannot buy online? First it was due to the time constraint, then it was you only had Paypal, then it was you only had cash....????

So from this and your YELLING at us without giving any more info, then you finding the best deal really is not your goal then. Good luck with whatever it is that is your ultimate vision here, I wish you luck. If you just simply want to learn how to shop at stores and haggle, there are many online resources that could more concisely tell you how to talk store clerks and management down. If you want to know how to find the best deals at brick and mortar stores, they make sales fliers and there are coupons that you can get by getting on mailing lists, or try to get them to match other stores or big online retailers. There is www.dealnews.com (external link) and www.pricegrabber.com (external link) for great daily deals and quick price comparisons.

Maybe these will help you in your quest, whatever it may ultimately be:

just go to your store, start talking to the sales person and ask them straight out.... whats their best price? it may or may not work?

i guess they wont price match B+H if you printed the price out?

if all else fails you suck it up and pay the price. and i guess it would be too late to rent the lens too (time restraints)?

bottom line is you came to this forum for help the last thing you want to do is YELL at the people trying to help you.

hope everything works out for you...

This thread has been great for a morning laugh. The OP appears to be in Hawaii...hence no delivery guarantees for an internet purchase. That also leads to part two of the dilemma...what are the chances of the local store doing a bunch of negotiations? Probably slim and none...they know their market...they know what people will pay...and how much they need to make...good luck haggling.

Who knows...you might just get the deal of the century...after all...you got away with screaming at a mod here.

All of this for $29 on a 50mm. Can't wait till he goes for an L. Don't know if there is a large enough font for that transaction.

T**tstands like this are what make working in the photographic industry a pain in the ass.

If you want it cheap buy online. If you want the opinion of someone who knows what they're on about, a working photographer, the convenience of buying in a store where you can return it, or just plain want it quickly, you'll pay the price of the goods AND ALL THE ****ING OVERHEADS associated with it.

Stores may be able to do you a deal, but walking in with an attitude like the one displayed will get you nowhere. It is not your god given right to be granted money off because you think you deserve it. Assuming such will likely get you no lens and a smack on the ass as the door hits you on the way out.

And ask yourself honestly, if the prices you're trying to get your store to match mean once their overheads are added in, is it really worth it to them to give you goods for 0% profit or even make a loss? No.

Sermon over.

Cheers, Dave.

why haggle? your basically only saving 10 dollars from the online price and shipping. plus you get it now and get to play with it the same day you buy it. i dont understand what the problem is. your paying for the convenience of having it now. thats why their prices are jacked up more. if it were a huge price difference then i would haggle a little bit. print out a couple of other places who have the same lens for a better price. some places will price match just to keep the client. other places like ritz camera doesnt care.
but i wouldnt be complaining about 10 dollars especially if i knew i could play with it the same day i bought it.
have a great weekend.

Last time I checked, 360-330 from the OPs post = $30 and that does not cover the sales tax, so roughly an additional $20 on top of that, so the difference is $50. Plus $330 is not the best online price, so the difference is even more. The realistic difference between the best reputable online shipped price and the OPs B&M w/tax price is roughly $80, or $70 with 2nd day shipping, or $60-ish with overnight shipping.

In any case, this post has most likely run its course, I would think.

The Hawaiian merchant had to pay Xtra for shipping. Everything not grown, made or invented in Hawaii cost Xtra $$. I lived there 10 years. You should see the price of toilet paper and Xmas trees

$30 Good Grief, buy the blasted lens

Too bad you can't get on the internet. :p

If you're that hung up on price, spend less. Buy some pencils and some paper and start sketching instead of photographing.

I shoot and I am sick of the price of .357 Magnum ammunition. I opted for a .22 revolver and instead of 50 shots at $14 now I pay $10 for 500.

There are always cheaper options. Heck, you could even do pinhole photography - build a pinhole camera.
