There's a guy who cuts the campsite field behind our house & every year at this time he gets Picked with HF Bites & yet he sits there quite happily on his mower no shirt on, no sense no feelin eh

I like those shots - nice textures, looks a gritty creature, very workmalike fly good at his job - biting people.

Superb shots Mark, the eye facet detail is wonderful.

Its great getting photos of these guys if you can, its a case of know your enemy lol.

Apparently with horseflies its only the female that bites lol.

The bite I got on the inside of my ankle in my own garden at the end of September last year, didnt completely heal until 2 weeks before Christmas!! I didnt see it or feel it, but it was the worst one I have ever had. It was the end of November before I could walk properly again and wear shoes - it well and truly got me.

I can't think of any insect bite in this Country that is worse unless of course one has an Allergy to something, this humid Weather seem to make them more hungry for human blood, I noticed quite a few as I was wandering through the Church Yard this morning but they were in no mood to be shot they just wanted my blood so I'm afraid to say a number got squished as I need al the Blood I got these days

Hi Mark,

I remember how aggressive horseflies are. I am quite impressed that you did not get eaten once it turned its eyeballs on you. But, I 'm not sure what it says when you are too mean for even the horseflies to bite.:p

They don't like blue blood Irwin only that common ol red stuff

If I'm ever trying to shoot biters or stingers I always hold my breath for as long as pos & try & make sure to breath out down wind coz I'm sure these blighter although having great eyesight they also rely on CO'S as a way of homing in on one
