Making the trip in about ten days, all by my lonesome. Not sure how I'm going to pack the car, but my camera bag is sitting shotgun for sure. Looking forward to all sorts of cool roadside shooting, might dig out the big maps and get off the interstate for a while. I'm going to be crossing Montana, through the mountainous part of Idaho, part of the cascades....should make for some good shot opportunities. Will post results in a few weeks!

Have fun. Idaho and Montana are great for landscapes. Just make sure you stop the car and get out instead of rolling down the windows. ;)

Dang you will be going real close to my place.(Goldendale, Wa) Take a break and rest, I saw a traffic fatality yesterday from someone going to sleep on the hiway.

Please speak slowly and distinctly. I have a wife, AND a computer, I don't need any more confusion in my life.

Good call on Glacier, should only be a few hours out of the way.

I seem to recall visiting Craters of the Moon National Park in Idaho as a kid. That could be interesting for photos.

If you're taking I-90 across... It would Really be ashame to miss out on visiting Yellowstone!
You'll be passing by less than 50-miles North of the North gate.
One of my favorite places in the continental US to shoot & visit.
Aw, heck... Now you have me wishing it were the first week of Oct., When I will be there!

Enjoy the ride. Take the time to See things...
I've made several drives between Chicago & Sacramento, fall, spring, and winter... Great

I had some friends who just got back from a trip to Glacier... what a spectacular place! With the right light and the right talent, some majestic shots could be found there.

Oh.. and welcome to Portland!!

I have a running argument with a few folks about the best route across MT. I-90 "may" be the fastest but for great scenery I prefer U.S. 2, which has the added advantage it goes right by Glacier. Many people have told me U.S. 2 is boring, but Rand-McNally agrees with me. It is designated scenic the whole length of MT. And if you are a train fan, U.S. 2 is one of the best routes.

Bob

When you get into Oregon, be sure to take I-84 through the Columbia River Gorge, then get off near Multnomah Falls and drive the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Highway and take time to stop at a few of the beautiful and scenic waterfalls along the way.

Don't forgot about Mt. Rushmore or Crazy Horse, though your timing may put you through South Dakota during the Sturgis motorcycle rally, so you may have tens of thousands of bikes all over the western part of the state.

I've been to Craters of the Moon before, spikey sharp jagged black pumice as far as the eye can see. Kinda creepy, total wasteland.

If you do nothing else, drop into Joseph and Wallowa Lake, Oregon via Cour de Lane Idaho from the north. Great rolling hills and photo ops galore. The problem is you will probably stay in Northeastern Oregon and never make it to Portland. Nice neck of the woods! Considered the Swiss Alps of the US.

We've made that trip a few times - kids living in Wisconsin. We finally convinced them to move out here too.

I second what Mark said, come in on I-84 if possible and go thru the Columbia River Gorge. Some of the most beautiful scenery around. Hop off near Multnomah Falls and take the scenic highway back to Troutdale, then back to I-84 and into Portland.

Been there before. Places to stop are Crow Agency Montana (Custer's Battle Field). Then approach Yellowstone from the Northwest by taking 212 from Red Lodge Montana to Cooke City Montan, if you look at it on Mapquest, you will see an area with lots of curves, there you go from 4000' to 11,000' and see some of the most beautiful scenery you will ever see.

PM me with your email and I'll send you a few shots. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME
