Hey all,
I recently returned from a four week study abroad in Ireland and would like to make a book of my images from there. The only problem is i have a lot of nice landscapes but also a lot of portraits (castles, towers, etc.) All the books are either portrait or landscape. I guess just have to make two books?

Hello troyer16;

Adobe Photoshop Elements has functionality to create an "album" with varying layouts, which you can then save for printing...

Alternatively, and good online printer will certainly have "photo album" creation options.

I'm located in the UK, so only know what's happening here, but I'm sure that the US must have the same. Take a look at online printers...

Cheers;

Lee

You can mix them if you like (after all it is your book). I have used Blurb.com and the process is straight forward enough - they have software that sets the templates for you. The one recommendation I would offer is that the order the photos appear in the book is how you tell the "story" of your trip. Its worth spending time to get this right. I used 4x6 proofs and put them on a foamcore sheet hung on the basement wall. They were pinned to the board so I could easily move them. Once I had the order the way I wanted I then placed them on the book pages. Good luck, Dennis

I've never run across them before. How is the quality of printing at blurb?

If you google "photo book" or the like, I'm sure you'll find something you are looking for. Also, I saw businesses advertising this service in the "Professional Photographer" publication. Let us know what you go with.

The POTN book will be done at Blurb.com. The book team did an evaluation of several suppliers and Blurb was chosen. I followed their lead.

I have little to compare to as Blurb is the only one I have used. The quality/price were good and they were on time. I did a 40 page book (80 images) it was about $40. Dennis

Yes. White or black around it's fine. Or put two portrait on a page. Check out one of my albums here

I'm not sure I understand the layout of your sample. It says 14 x 10, but looking at these page sample, visually guessing it looks more like a 3:1 page size ratio as opposed to 1.4x1. Is there an (imaginary) gutter in the middle of these pages?

I guess just have to make two books?

You could choose the portrait format & run the landscapes across two pages.

How is the quality of printing at blurb?

Very good. I've only had one issue with matching the dust cover with an interior pic that was caused by a printer problem. They gave me a free reprint.
I didn't care for the type + pic layouts, so I mostly made full size bleed layouts in PS & loaded them the book.

Links to two books I've done in here: Cover shot of the '69 Plymouth Road Runner 440

Is there an (imaginary) gutter in the middle of these pages?

They recommend an 1/8 margin for full size bleed pages. There is a gutter, & the "fix" is in their doc. Put the same 2X wide image into 2 pages, & in the 2 page view layout, adjust them to look right. Print a proof copy & adjust from there.

Keep in mind that I made every full page shot in PS & sized & sharpened the shot for the book. I didn't use their resizing option, so your results may vary.

(I just posted this to the wrong thread. Sorry, I'll paste it here)

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I wasn't detailed enough in my gutter question or perhaps my brain's not working correctly.

Look at tim's book here (external link). If each one of these long, horizontal page examples is actually two pages with a gutter in the middle, then the gutter is slicing some of the photos. Correct? Or does each one of these pages represent a single page in the book and there is no gutter... in other words, the book format is a very wide, horizonal offsize book. Hope that made sense.

I've had Blurb make one of my books. The quality was pretty good for a "non professional Lab" job...
