MIII - Focus Point Expansion question

I have not ever used focus point expansion on prior bodies. I tried it last night doing some testing shooting car license plates. The results weren't great. Here's my question. The middle setting only expands the horizontal focus points, not the vertical ones. Is this aware of whether the camera is in landscape or portrait orientation, or is it only going to work in landscape? I shoot most sports in portrait orientation so that is where I'd like to try it.

You can set the custom function so that the expansion goes all around instead of just left and right (in landscape mode). But, to answer your question, In portrait mode, I'd think that the expansion would be up and down since the manual makes no mention of the expansion adjusting for the orientation of the camera.

I was guessing the same thing, but hoping to get a confirmation. From what I've heard, the right/left deal works better than the all around deal. I've not had good luck with either, and I'd have no use for up/down only... so I guess this one is not going to be something I probably use much.

OK, I just found confirmation in one of the Canon PDF guides that they've put out that they are up/down shooting vertical.
