Common darter dragonflies

bemoaning the fact that I hadn't had many dragonflies in the garden yet, had visits by both a male and female common darter the other day. The male was a lot more skittish than the female.

Cross-eye stereograms enable to freeview the pics to produce a stereo image.

These can be viewed as is by slightly de-focusing your eyes and then cross them until an image appears in the middle and then relax your eyes to get a stable 3-D image. It's worth the trouble!
But don't overdo it if you have difficulty- try again later.(headache warning)

I've started seeing quite a few common darters about not yet in the garden though, but I,ve got a cunning plan going to make our pond bigger in the winter should attact more dragonflies next summer to our garden

Glad you have had some more visit Gorgeous face shots Brian.

Lets hope they mated and she laid eggs before the torrential rain this morning, as I am sure it has killed a lot of dragonflies - and other insects.

Great set Brian, I haven't seen a single dragonfly in my garden this year and I always have had southern hawkers (Aeshna cyanea)at least in my garden for as long as I can remember but this year nothing.

I'm intrigued as to what that ' Blue Stuff ' is that appears on the end of the Cane, is it a trick of the light or your secret attractant for DF's ?? oh go on you can tell me no one else is looking

Alby- have had the odd hawker patrolling the garden but hadn't seen many of the darters which I normally get quite a few of.

Linda- unfortunately I'm pretty certain they did not see each other.

Mark - you've caught me out- the blue stuff is blue tack I use to stick the bugs down with
It actually is the remains of some blue tack- believe it or not I made some fake flowers earlier this year just out of a milk bottle top with a piece of pan scrubber in the middle to soak up a sugar/honey mixture and stuck them onto the top of some canes with blue tack. The experiment sort of worked I certainly had a lot of bumble bees feeding from them but the set up was not good from a photography point of view. The bees got so used to this they visited the bottle tops even when I had not topped them up.
That was just the remains of the blue tack and no the DF wasn't stuck to it. I do leave plant canes in strategic sunny spots at the right height for me exactly for the purpose of photographing DFs on them though. The darters always oblige by perching on them- last year they were fighting over them. The hawker DFs are not nearly as sensible and always just hang themselves from a bush- might need taller canes for them
