Cannot make my mind. I can take only one of these lenses:

70-200 f/2.8 or
100-400 f/4.5-5.6

Which one would you chose to take to zoo?

Will appreciate your help. Flying out tomorrow morning. Thanks,

m

You can always get the better lense 70-200 f/2.8 and then get a converter to bring you up. Hrm..

If it's going to be bright and sunny the 100-400, I always recon 300mm is about right for most zoos, but if it's likely to be dull then the 70-200 will be your better bet.

either will work fine. if you choose the 70-200L make sure to bring along a 1.4 TC.

Thank you guys.

I do not have converter. It will be sunny day, so, I guess, I will bring 100-400. Have never believe in taking photos in the zoo(animals need to be photograph in the wild) but, will be stuck in DC for a day so I thought it would be fun to go to the National Zoo there.

Thanks again,

m

Hmmmm, is there a possibility there will be dark exhibits? Like the aquarium? The gorilla habitat? That 2.8 will be missed if there are.

I am sure I will be missing 70-200, but, I just have to make hard choices. Also carrying 24-105 f/4L and 17-40 f/4L needed for the rest of my trip and just do not have enough room in my carry-on for two big lenses.

Thank you again for your help,

m

its a matter of give and take... the 100-400 will work for most outdoor exhibits (assuming its a bright day out)... the 70-200 will handle any lighting (indoors or out) but simply won't have the reach required for the outdoor exhibits...

I'd take the 100-400. Awesome lens.

100-400.
If you have a crop body, you might be able to make do with the 70-200 + TC.

But I suggest the 100-400L. That's a PERFECT zoo lens!
