Signing sister's bridal portrait - question

I recently did my sister's bridal portraits for her. She loved them and I had one printed on a 20x30 canvas stretcher frame for her (props to MPIX).

Because she is my baby sister, she is insisting that I sign the picture. She said that she wants my signature on the picture, not on a mat or border, because her sister took her picture and not some other photographer. This was a big deal to her for some reason - I'm not sure why. I've been taking her pictures of various things for years. I'm chalking it up to an emotional bride right now. But it really does seem to mean a lot to her, and I think it will for years to come.

I did a search on here because I knew it was something that had been discussed before and it looked like sharpies and gel pens were the method of choice. However, it sounded like those were the method of choice for standard prints. What about a canvas? Does that make a difference? This also has a lustre coating. Are sharpies or gel pens still the best way to go? Will they fade or discolor over time? What about foil methods - can anyone give me any info on that?

I've never signed a photo before, and would prefer not to do this one. I am afraid of messing up the picture or taking away from it. But because it does mean so much to my sister...and because she is my sister, I want to do it for her. But, I want to do it the best way I can to keep it from smudging, discoloring, and fading.

Thanks in advance for any help!

paint your signature on there. it is a canavas. i think a sharpie would sink into the fabric some. and a paint pen would look strange. my mom ( many ywars ago) had a photo put on canvas when i was around 15, and the guy put his signature on with a sharpie fine print, and it looks fake, and too added on. and kind of cheap looking. for year i have thought a signature like an artist would have been the way to go because as a photographer you are an artist. :)

Shanny, I was thinking the same thing about a sharpie. I just didn't like it. I was leaning more towards the archival pens, but didn't know what was the best to use. LIke I said - never signed one of these before and ugh, does it make me nervous. I don't want to mess it up with my ugly John Hancock at the bottom! Painting it is a good idea too. That's even newer territory for me though. Haha! I've never painted outside of the little tray of watercolor paints as a kid...or, um, paint by number. :) Photography is my extent of artistic ability, but I think I could handle painting my signature. What kind of paint do you use?

When you sign, do you sign straight across in an even line, or diagonally?

Am I making this way more difficult than it really is? haha!!!

And....since I posted the picture...what color should I do this in? Black? Silver? Hot pink? ;) Just kidding...

Practice. Does the canvas fold under? Test it somewhere where it won't be seen. The canvas prints I've seen the sig was added to the photo, and just printed on. Maybe ask MPIX what to do.

In that pic, I recommend black ink, signed in the lower right corner.

shooting club VB and club soccer, hoping to get back to landscape work soon.

Since the image has been printed to canvas already you have only 2 choices really, either use a fine point paint pen or get yourself a fineline brush and hand paint it on the canvas.
I used to paint landscapes in oils and I would sign using the fineline brush. it takes some practice but the end results are fantastic.

Just another shutterbug.

maybe get a couple of peices of canvas from a craft store, and try it out with a couple of different pens, and then some paint and see what happens?
i think the photo is outstanding, and i think if its going to be framed the artist should sign it. ;) anyway. i personally think that pain will be best. maybe more people will have a few other suggestions.
have a great week,
shannon
