Can anyone tell me is it possible to make a selection in ACR?
For example if i was just wanting a certain part of the image to be lighter/darker than the rest of the the image.would it be possile to make a selection with a selection tool,the way you can in photoshop?

No.
You can use the 'vignette' adjustment, or develop a CR2 twice, and mask in Photoshop.

Only Raw converter that can do what you want, would be LightZone

would it be possile to make a selection with a selection tool,the way you can in photoshop?

If you've never tried Layer Masks, read this: Is there anywhere I can read up on tiffs and adjustment layers and channel masks?
