Still trying to figure out this 1D shutter count thing. Long post but inquiring minds want to know. Posted on FM an Photo.net as well.

I have seen all the threads, and read the opinnions, I need some more opinions or even better would be some facts. In other threads, and other forums, the consensus was that if you see the following:

Unknown (0093)3, 9 : 18, 0, 31766, 0, 0, 0, 65535, 65535, 1

It means that particular 1D has 31766 clicks on it.

and if you see:

Unknown (0093)3, 9 : 18, 1, 8595, 0, 0, 0, 65535, 65535, 0

It means that particular 1D has 65535 + 8595 + 1 = 74131 clicks on it.

The above two are the only ones I have seen an explantion for.

OK THE ABOVE MAKES SENSE, however, is it accurate?

Now if you see this:

Unknown (0093)3, 9 : 18, 0, 6006, 0, 0, 0, 3, 0, 0

what the hell does that mean. Does it mean that camera has only 6006 clicks on it? Now I have seen the original sales receipt for this camera from the original owner, the camera has not been back to Canon for service and it is in pristine condition. So whats up with this.

Now here is another one:

Unknown (0093)3, 9 : 18, 0, 29333, 0, 0, 0, 4, 0, 1

What does this one mean?

Or this one:

Unknown (0093)3, 9 : 18, 0, 31766, 0, 0, 0, 3, 2, 1

So the questions are what do the following readings really mean:

1. Unknown (0093)3, 9 : 18, 0, XXXXX, 0, 0, 0, 65535, 65535, 1

2. Unknown (0093)3, 9 : 18, 1, XXXXX, 0, 0, 0, 65535, 65535, 0

3. Unknown (0093)3, 9 : 18, 0, XXXXX, 0, 0, 0, 3, 0, 0

4. Unknown (0093)3, 9 : 18, 0, XXXXX, 0, 0, 0, 4, 0, 1

5. Unknown (0093)3, 9 : 18, 0, XXXXX, 0, 0, 0, 3, 2, 1

That stuff is never truly accurate.

Use this:

I've used it. On all the files in the OP. The only other information it gives is a "raw tag data it hex along with a number purported to be the shutter count. :) Cosworth, why do you think 1DCount is accurate?

Well, a shutter count that is accurate. For example, if the camera has gone in to canon for service, they reset the shutter count, that would be nice to know, if the shutter count has turned over after 65535, that is good to know as well.

Being the curious sort, I like to know what the numbers mean. Some folks sell 1D bodies, they have no clue how many clicks are on their cameras. They bought the camera second hand, not a bad thing, as long as you know what you are buying. I have had people try an convince me that the shutter count they are giving me is accurate when I know it is not, based on the little information that I have been able to gleen from various forums.

1dCount gives you a number purporting to be the shutter count. Where does it come from what does it mean. Is it the total shutter count on that shutter even if the 1D has passed 65535 and turned back over. Internally, the camera deals with these numbers somehow. In my OP, I posted several different versions of readings from different 1D's. I want to know what the numbers mean. Thanks!

1Dcount counts past 65535. The numbers from photoshop do not.

I just ran this 1DCount program on an image taken last night and I got the following. Why is it blank?

is it possible that the mkIII is setup differently and the software can't read it?

Differently than the mkII? Maybe that's it - I don't know anything about the software but spotted it in this thread from just yesterday and figured I'd give it a try and assumed it would work with the Mk. III...

So then how can you check the shutter count on the Mk. III? I couldn't find anything in the File Info in PS...

Thanks - I'd be surprised if 1 MkIII worked and another didn't...

It seems that the Mk3 has a completely different way of counting the shutter actuations to the other 1D series bodies, and no-one has worked it out yet.
1DCount certainly gives a reading which is in accordance with what I know my Mk2 has done.
