Hi All,
I have a massive photoshop issue and am working on a big job I must submit tonight...Photoshop CS2 on a PC with 2 gb of ram, and over 100 GB of free space on 2 hard drives, and photoshop is telling me their is no free scratch space (the scratch is assigned to the disks with the free space). Why? I dont think it is a unstall/uninstall issue as I unhooked my computer and hooked up another one and am getting the same problem. if anyone knows a fix please post it here or call 514-639-4016 before 3AM eastern and be rewarded with tons of Karma.
Cheers,
a stressed Tim in Montreal

Add both drives as scratch disks, restart PC (just in case).

Did you read my post properly? See attached image. Add every disk you have as scratch.

Also tell me about what you're doing, what images you have open, their dimensions, color mode (RGB/CMKY), and bit depth.

I have set 2 disks as scratch, both have over 100 gb of free space. i get the same message trying to crop any image, either from an internal or external HD. Raw or JPG. images are from a 20d, bit depth of 8, RGB, Adobe 98, and only 1 image open at a time. any help is appreciated as I start work in 4 hours.
The problem is happening on 2 different machines. legal copies of CS2 bought by me from Adobe.

Go into the task manager (control-alt-delete brings it up). Look under performance and tell me how much RAM it says is in the machine, and how much is available (available is in green bottom left graph). Next go into the process tab, make sure the "VM size" column's being shown. Click it twice so it's sorted by VM size, largest to smallest. Tell me what the top 3 says, and if photoshop's not in that tell me what it says.

Also make sure in PS you've only allocated about 50% of your memory to photoshop.

your hard drive could have too many tiny files in the filesystem, using up all the inodes even if there is free space left. try deleting everything from your windows\temp and other temp directories you find.

I really really really really recommend CleanUp!. It's a little free program available here: http://www.stevengould.org …&task=view&id=29&Itemid=1 (external link)

I use it regularly, and it's terrific for cleaning out all those little temp files that Michael was talking about.

DL'ed cleanup and ran it...thanks btw...but didn't help. in task manager, under performance it says physical memory is 2095852k, with 1618836k available. CPU usage is at 4%. processes are top 5 firefox, svchost.exe, explorer.exe, mcsheild.exe, photomechanic, with photoshop being way down on the list.

I think you're screwed, find another computer to use until you can sort this out when you have time. You've got me stumped. Can you show us a screenshot of the scratch disk preferences?

Under "Memory & Image Cache" in preferences, what are your settings?

(Clutching at straws here ...)

sure, if you tell me how...I can use a computer just fine, and can use many apps, but am clueless when it comes to advanced programming...not that a screenshot is advanced. also, why would this problem happen on 2 computers simultaniously?
