RAW conversion to JPEG in PS CS2

Hello,

I've tried searching the forum but I can't seem to find an answer to this...if anyone has a comment, I'd really appreciate it!

I have a rebel xti and the RAW file size averages around 8MB.
Converting the raw file to JPG using Canon's DPP leaves a file around
6MB saved at 300DPI. Using CS2 and Camera Raw to convert the RAW file
(which I prefer to use), saves as a jpeg at a file size of about
2MB at 300 DPI. Is CS2 camera raw compressing the image more than DPP
and is it affecting the image quality? Now I'm getting worried about
the image files that I'm sending to my printer to be processed as prints.

The RAW file size is 2592 x 3888, 10.1MP. When I open the RAW files in CS2,
on the bottom left hand corner of the screen, I have it set for the
same size "2592 x 3888 10.1MP", Adobe RGB, 8 bits/channel and 300dpi,
to convert to JPG. After it converts them to JPG files, they're
the same pixel size, 2592 x 3888, but they're just under 2MB.

When I use the Canon DPP software to convert my RAW images, they come out to the same size "2592 x 3888" but they're about 7.8MB.

Will this affect prints (especially poster size 16x20 up to 30x40) or what am I missing or doing incorrectly in CS2?

Thanks so much!!!!

Welcome to the forum.

This is likely to be because of the compression but also your Save As settings in ACR. My XT RAW files are usually around 7MB but when converted are usually around 3-4MB so something isn't quite right with your setup.

Typically when I upload pics for prints most of my files are between 2-3 MB for up to 8x10 and I have seen no loss of quality. For a larger size pic the same file size (or slightly larger) would be likely because I wouldn't upload at 300 ppi for a 16x20 or 30x40 (which would raise your pixel count to 4800 x 6000 and 9000 x 12000). I would likely lower my ppi but the same amount of pixels would be present, so my file size wouldn't change. It would likely be larger than the 2-3 MB above because I threw away some pixels for those images printed at 8x10 or smaller.

I would check your settings in ACR during the conversion. If you edit the RAW and then click OPEN it should convert to TIFF or PSD anyway and then you would have to SAVE AS in CS2 to make it a jpeg. If you choose to SAVE AS in ACR then make sure you use JPEG level 12.

I believe you may be confusing the terms MP ( mega pixel ) with MB ( mega byte ). An 8mp picture saved, depending on which jpeg level, will be around 3-4 MB.

Gotcha, I'm using a Rebel xti, an 8Mp camera, so yes, that's part of my confusion:-)

So RAW files are much larger in size but when I convert them in CS2 and wind up with a JPEG of 1.2Mb, for example. Is this large enough to have printed in a 16x20, or as large as 30x40? I always open them in CS2 and resize them to the size print I want, but I'm wondering if I'm starting with a 1.2Mb file, will I notice a difference in quality and should I be shooting for a 3-4Mb JPEG to begin with? When DPP converts RAW to JPEG, the JPEGS are about 6Mb, but I prefer to use CS2 for PP. I'll have to check out the link I found in this forum to the DPP tutorials, maybe I'll change my mind as to which one I prefer to use after going through those:-)

Thanks!!!

The XTi is a 10MP camera, not an 8MP. I don't think you confused anything like vetkrazy says.

As I mentioned above your files should be larger than 1-2 MB when converted from ACR. Can you do a screen shot of ACR during a conversion?

OK all looks good (Although I hate the Auto and have mine set to off, but that has nothing to do with your question).

So now, when you choose to be done with your RAW do you click Open Copy or click Save and then open the file in CS2?

When you click Save what options do you use? Screen Shot?

IIRC you can change the quality setting to 12 (although that may only be in PS and not ACR).

Typically I choose to Open rather than Save directly from ACR because I have more work to do. In your workflow you would need to open in PS anyway to convert from Adobe RGB to sRGB before sending to your printer (unless they accept Adobe RGB images). Have you tried this method and do a Save As in PS to see what you get?

I'll do so tonight and see what I get! I normally run my RAW images through ACR, then open those that I'm going to work with individually. Maybe I should sort through my RAW images first, and put those that I want to work on in a folder, then run them through ACR and Open those right away...

I'll let you know what happens!

Thanks so much!!!

You can open more than one photo in ACR. If you use Bridge just CTRL + Click the ones you want to edit and then double click on one of them. ACR will look a little different but not much. When you are done editing the shots click Select All in the top left and click Open Copies (xx).

Sure enough, I merely opened the RAW image, THEN did a SAVE AS in PS and wa la, it's 3.89Mb! However, I don't know how to change it to sRGB. Do I need to change a setting somewhere within PS to get that option to come up in this screen?

Is there a correct way to convert convert images to sRGB?

I see under Edit, there is Color Settings, Assign Profile and Convert to Profile...

And wouldn't I want the sRGB to come up in the window above all the time?
