Im seeking some council. I have had my Sony 21" Trinitron for over 5 years, and it's been a great workhorse for all my photo editing. Lately the entire screen has become washed out. I have a ColorVision spyder and the brightness of the screen is off the charts (150 units when it's supposed to be 90-ish) I have the contrast cranked to 100 and the Brightness to 0, so there's no more adjustment. The blacks are just dark grey now.
I presume CRTs have a usable life, and could mine be at it's end? It's been on, but blanked out of work hours continuously for years.
Any input or experiences appreciated.

Just a lark, do you degauss?

But 5 years... I'd be happy that it lasted that long.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

some sony's seem to have psu problems and wear out after a couple of years, I read about this problem on multiple graphic forums.

Yes, I tried all the buttons and options on the display! But I think it's just old, and tired. It looks it. Of course, sitting next to my new LG Phillips 20" LCD it looks positively decrepit, but I still don't want to have to edit my photos on the LCD--aargh.

cheers,

The accepted professional life of a CRT is three to five years, assuming steady use. Whether you have some additional problem or not, the tube is probably beyond the pale. LCDs aren't immune either in that the tiny elements wink out one after the other.

Repair, a new tube, will likely cost more than a new monitor. Time to look around for the latest and greatest.
