Just arrived today!!!! YEAH!!! A good sharp copy, I am pretty happy. I bought it used, about a year old. No instruction manual, unfortunately. My only question, can the focus be safely turned by hand when it is in auto mode or do I need to set the selector to manual? I have had Sigmas that go each way? Thanks all!

Nope, you can adjust focus while it is in AF mode. Enjoy, it is a wonderful lens, I almost miss mine, but the 100-400 with a TC makes up for it!

Your Bigma has a ring HSM motor along with full time manual capability. So you can fine-tune your focus after AF lock simply by turning the focus ring. Enjoy.

Enjoy it....it's big and bulky, but the range is incredible and the IQ can be great.

Of course that applies when you're in one shot... you don't want to be fighting against servo focus mode. :)

Enjoy! It's a very useful versatile lens.

I think the intent is you set the focus using AF, then micro adjust it, then take the shot. This would assume you have set the custom function to assign focus to the AE button, so that you have more control over when the camera focuses in regards to when you actually hit the shutter button.

Of course, when using the 3x TC or stacked 3x/1.4x TCs, you might as well just put it into MF mode, since you will have to manually focus all the time, and you don't want to accidentally hit the * or shutter buttons and have the AF completely mess up your focus zone.

'The intent'? The OP didn't bring up custom function settings so by going with defaults, what I said is accurate, is it not? You would be fighting AI Servo if you try to FTM unless you're in one shot focus mode.
