Event Photography and Direct Printing

I am going to be taking shots at a comedy club every Sunday and wondered for direct printing do you guys connect the camera directly to the printer or shoot tethered from a laptop and have the printer connected to that?

I'll chime in for you, I have done events similar to what you are talking about several times. First go answer these questions.

1. How much down time will there be? If you are printing from your camera you aren't taking pictures.

2. Are you making money for this event? If so cool if not, this can be a very expensive self promotion event.

3. Are you print all prints or only ones people want to buy? Previewing on your camera isn't going to work.

Having done this, I suggest the following. Go with a partner who is running Lightroom, or photoshop on his laptop, If you are using PS, have anothere program to preview prints for those that are intrested. Then have him do the printing/post production while you are still shooting.

I will only be taking shots of those who want pictures. The shots will be on the stage after the comedians are done, befoe the after parties and maybe during.

I will be paid for each shot

Only one camera, so I figure maybe it would be best to shoot with the camera attached to my laptop (when you do this are the pics saved on the cpu or the camera?).

You are taking shots of the person performing and you are expecting people to pay for those shots? Don't know if there is a market for that exactly. Are you expecting the performer to pay for them? If you are just printing 4x6's, just get a little printer with a card reader. I just switch CF cards and print directly from that. Your camera will be freed up. But printing at the event is problematic, you know this right? It takes a minute or two just to see if the shot is okay to print. You will have no time to PP. In dim light, you will want to do some PP. I would definitely look at your business plan and then consider that printing there requires at least one helper.

I should explain where I'm coming from. I shoot for free at events, the organization pays or I just donate the cost. I shoot for a while, then print for a while. It takes a lot of practice. I have currently increased my gear, having 2 portable 4x6 printers with card readers. At Christmas I took pictures of 50+ kids with Santa, one of his helpers helped me print up the pictures while I shot. It worked out well. Another helper cut the picture to fit the frame. But it takes a good camera, a steady hand and no PP. I literally took the card out, gave it to the helper and out came the shots. You can't do this alone, it doesn't work, if you want to sell the pictures right there.

1. Take about 15-20 pictures (MAX)

2. Swap cards and copy card to portable CF reader for backup.

3. Pass card to my partner, who copes them onto the laptop, he then opens them and prints them blah blah blah, whatever else needs to be done.

i use the epson picture mate....

We do onsite printing at events.
Below is our old Kodak Dye-Sub Printers that we have replaced with one Shinko Dye-Sub printer that prints much much faster than the 2 Kodaks combined.

I am shooting guests at my son's wedding (I know that sounds awful, doesn't it?) as they arrive. For the party favors, they are getting a 4x6 in a cardboard sleeve or frame. It is not something I enjoy doing, but it can be loads of fun. I really like Manny's set up and someday will go to something more complex if I think it's a good solution. The fact that there has to be 3 of you isn't good, must have reliable and talented help. I also would do the PP and let others shoot, but I like to shoot and not PP. AHHHH.

The people coming to see the comedy show are the people I am taking pictures of. I do have an assistant who will take the shots after I set everything up. This is just like when people take pictures at clubs or plays.

At these events, I am doing the PP and printing of the images while my partner takes the pictures and his wife (and sometimes his Daughter) takes the orders.

When I do onsite Golf printing, I have my brother drive me around in a golf cart while I snap the pictures of the 4 somes and after I get everyone we head back to the club house where we had set up the computer and the color laser printer (we use the color laser since it is really really fast and the quality is "ok" for this job), I'll PP and print while my brother puts the prints into the sleeved folders.
