raw and photoshop

I have photoshop cs3 and cant view raw files is that normal

Yes, it's fairly common. Just go to the Adobe website and download the latest Camera Raw plugin.

did that did not work i can see them in explorer but not in bridge or cs3 extended i was able to use cs2 before

AFAIK CS2's ACR (3.7) did not support the Mk3. ACR 4.1 does...

Did you update your CS3 Bridge and ACR? Adobe's website has the latest update for the entire CS3 suite. IIRC, you need to at least update ACR in order to view the RAW files from 1DMIII.

The easiest way to upgrade PS is to open PS and select Help > Updates. This will automatically place the correct ACR file into the correct location to ensure that you don't place the file in the incorrect directory which is a common problem.

i have the lastest updates according to adobe raw shows the 4.1 plugin installed

Reinstall it. Maybe something got corrupt during download.

okay the issue is with raw files from mark III only i use the compressed version i can open files created with 5d

The 4.1 plugin supports the Mk3 files, reinstall it. Also see the ACR RAW FAQ linked from the forum FAQ and my sig.

Camera Raw 4.1 does not support the Canon EOS-1D Mark III SRAW format at this time

this is from the read me in 4.1
