If a camera gets wet and now does not power up, mirror locks up into closed position. What could be damaged internally? Is it something you can possibly fix on your own?

BTW its not my camera (thank god!) Just curious if its worth looking into getting a camera that got wet.

Im sure the microprocessors could short out just like in a computer. I would remove the batteries, lens, and open all compartments, and place it out in the seat of a closed up car. Let the interior of the car get up to about 150 degrees in the sun and bake for several hours. Let the heat suck out that moisture. Roll down the windows just a crack to let out the moist vapors. It its not already shorted out that just might revive it. Ive revived iginition modules by baking them and removing the moisture that was shorting the circuits internal.
I wouldnt hold out a great deal of hope though since it has already been powered up wet.

Wet can mean many different degrees of 'wetting'. e.g. was it dropped in a river or just got a dowsing in a sudden rain shower? If dropped in or seriously wetted by sea/saltwater then IMO that is goodbye camera.

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

if it's salt water, say goodby, as all the printboards are now useless. for all other occations, you may want to try taking out the batteries, putting it in deionized water, then baking it at 150F (150C could end up damaging some plastics). works well on cellphones, not sure if the lubricants in the camera would seep out though.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Salt water does not necessarily spell death, but the likelihood is high especially if you powered the equipment on. My stupid dog peed on a small black and white TV for god knows what reason. We took it out in the backyard and hosed it off thinking it was dead and tried it a few days later and it still worked. Also, wet can mean a lot of different things. I like the leaving it in a hot car idea. Might want to also try that with the lens off allowing the innards to dry out. But chances are that an upgrade is in your future. There is too much to go wrong with not only electronics but optics and mechanics as well.

well i emailed the owner of hte camera to see what his definition of "Wet" was. Im hoping it wasn't dropped in anykind of large body of water and just got some rain drops. But for the price, it might be worth a shot.

Just about any of the electronics could be, and probably are, trashed. With the geometry and design rules of the IC's are built to, it really doesn't take much anymore.

You can send it in for an estimate, but .....

There are a lot of reports , of cameras that have died from water damage. One of the big causes of this is not paying proper attention to condensing environments. Taking a cold camera into warm humid air will cause internal condensing. Over time this will also damage your camera.

Here is a great pic of what water can do. Unfortunately, metal frame cameras can suffer from this worst than plastic as not only the circuitry gets affected, but so can the case itself. If one of those metal chips breaks free and rattles around, you have a great mechanism to cause a short circuit. But it’s safe to say, water + any camera = not good things.

again its not my camera. Mine works fine. This is one that is for sale pretty cheap and thats why i keep thinking about picking it up and maybe trying to see if it can be fixed anyway. If I do get it i want to send it out to get converted to Infrared only.

Why would you want to buy a camera with water damage? They are almost without exception worthless. The cost to repair is prohibitive.
