What is so flawed with the 30D to have high desire for 40D?

I have a D60 (since 2003) and I'm thinking to upgrade soon.

Since I've heard the 30D is due to be upgraded later this year ... to the 40D? ... I was thinking of passing on the 30D and waiting for its successor.

Is this sound reasoning? Thanks.

People who upgrade with newer models "should/need" do so from a business stand point only or when they make a "considerable" upgrade from the bottom of the barrel in point-and-shoot world or from the low consumer end DSLRs.
Ex. The EOS 1D MKII N to the MKIII simply because they are probably going through cameras left and right! Everything breaks, and if you have used something long enough, then they will inevitably fail on you. The question is, should you ditch it while it works or wait until it fails you on the job?

The only other time you should upgrade is when you make a considerable change from one model to another, ie the Nikon D40 to the D200 seems to be a decent example or the Canon EOS 350 to the 5D or MKII/MKIII bodies... To some, they have the funds to make that drastic of a jump when they have the cash!

I had a D100 from Nikon and it took great pictures, I got a D200 and it took great pictures with more bells and whistles, I went to Canon and have 30Ds, those take great pictures! Get the trend?

All I have to say is, what did Ansel Adams shoot with, how many mega pixels did he have on his camera?

Yes, but when was the last time you tried to buy Ansel's film in the local Ritz? . . . :D

I applaud your opinion but abhor the word "should"!

For you to say when I "should" upgrade is ludicrous, to say the least. I will upgrade when I'm ready and my reasons are my own!

I want to upgrade to the 40D because I want a new toy and I'm sure I'll be able to take better pictures with it than I can with my 20D! Also I want a 40D so I'll be cool like some of the other people. Maybe it's because I want to look younger or older! Who knows?:lol::lol:

All I do know for sure is that I can't wait for the 40D!!!

First off, do whatever you want. I hope you don't feel like you need my approval to buy or not to buy something. My post was in no way directed towards you. It was to continue with what the thread started had to say about how people jump on the rumor mill taking it for gospel and filling up forum after forum with imaginary and undefined release dates and features followed by 50 threads being formed about how people just HAVE to own this vapor ware.

I combined "SHOULD" and "NEED" as in it being detrimental to upgrade. I am as big of a "gear whore" (for lack of a better word) as anyone else and would have absolutely no problem upgrading with each and every iteration of pro cameras that come out.
I say if you have the luxury to buy new equipment then go right ahead. Just keep in mind that I said from a business stand point and made all my refrences to those who would be bankrupt if their camera's shot counter was like a mileage agreement on a car lease that the camera would most likely fail from such consistent usage!

I'm just saying that there is no "real" NEED for an upgraded model. The bells and whistles will me improved and there will be neat new features but nothing that will drastically change the world of photography. So those without the funds still realize that what they have is still good...

I am almost 100% positive that you would take better photos with a 40D than your 20D...
It is a new piece of equipment and you will want to take it everywhere and use it all the time. With usage come frequency and that increases the number of good photos to mediocre and poor ones...

I play guitar. When I started out, I played a POS. Eventually I saved and got a halfway decent guitar and guess what? I got way better. Did it play better and fell better to play, you bet... Did I get better because I used the heck out of it, you bet!

what would an up grade to the 30d? 10 or 12 MP's? Dust shakey sensor ?(just something else that can break) or full frame? nothing that would make me sell the 30D for... now, maybe if i had an xt or xti or maybe a 20D... then it might be worth it.... I think it should have a FF sensor, built in grip like the 1D cams, 12 or 16MP, 8 to 10 FPS, live view LCD with tilt / swivel and come with a breer tap!!

What is flawed? Plenty. Given that Canon does in fact have competition in the digital camera industry, and that competition has actually been making progress instead of tweaking a 5 year old design. Specifically, Canon needs to address the following:

- Lousy AF system by todays standards. Needs more AF points and more cross type points.
- CMOS needs updated using Canon's latest microlens and photosite technology to yield better IQ/DR. It also needs at least 10MP to be competitive.
- Weather seals. To the guy that said it won't happen, don't bet on it. If Pentax is offering seals on a <$1000 body and it's on the Nikon D200, then Canon needs to get with it.
- Seriously horrible vertical grip design.
- Better batteries
- Dust shaker (not that it's essential, but again....competition)
- ISO50 & ISO6400...maybe. At least better noise control on ISO1600~3200 ala MKIII.
- +/-3 stops for exposure comp
- Better than 95% viewfinder coverage (actually, a completely new viewfinder would be a good idea)
- Some full time indication of ISO setting without going to a menu
- Fix the memory card door problem (ala MKIII)
- ISO priority mode (like Pentax)
- User setting memory
- Single, user programmable, hard button (like Nikon)

etc. etc. etc.

Point is, there is PLENTY left to update on the 30D.

no doubt about it.

it's disappointing what canon has (not) done since the 10D to that line.

i just want it to come out so i can get the 30D for a little less.
more money for glass and lighting. (seeming to be what everyone forgets about)

i'd be quite happy with a 20D at the minute.
but i'm worried if i buy one now, the 40D will come out, and lose the whole value of my camera.
so i'm sitting it out.
so i can get a bit of a discount on an outstanding camera, the 30D.
i couldn't ask for more from a camera body.

Ryan.

We could always go back to the 1800's and their pin-hole cameras! They worked! Of course those big film-plates were a real pain and the exposure time was in the seconds so no one could wiggle!

Ryan, a 20D would be a great camera for you and you could probably buy one used at a wonderfully low price of around $600.00. I paid around $1400 for mine:lol:

You're right about the 40D coming out. It will happen but we don't know exactly when. It could happen in a couple weeks or not. No official announcement has been made and no official price. Guess is around $1400-$1500. It could be less.

A 30D would also be great and price is now around $1000.

Good luck to you and whatever you do!

- hatred of 30d from the 20d fanboys
- gadget geeks who cares about tools than skills
- competitive evolution among brands
- my old 993 is still a joy despite the intro of 997.

The old 10D can still take great pix.
