I just got a new PC with Vista. So far so good. The only thing I might change is to upgrade to a 64bit version to take advantage of all my RAM...

The only time I have used Vista is 'in the store' as well as on a friends laptop. While all the eye candy is nice we noticed that it really eats up memory. The laptop, specifically, had 2gb ram with Core 2 chip.

It really turned me off to it and if Vista won't 'solve' its resource hogging my next comp will most likely be a Mac.

Why should I have to turn off all the eye candy, features, etc to reclaim my speed/responsiveness?

.

That's by design. If you have 2GB of RAM why not use it. I find my machine faster with Vista.

I use vista 64 and photoshop cs3. after several tests, I determined that CS3 runs faster and utilized more physical RAM in vista 64 than it does in vista 32 or xp. since then, I've increased my ram to 6gb and i can edit files with 20 layers without any sluggishness. xp can't do that!

good luck :-)

you must have some REALLY old hardware!

Rellik wrote in post #3605853 (external link)
I myself will stick to XP for awhile. If you have any older hardware, they may not work with Vista because there aren't any drivers for them. Even if the drivers are available, they will not be as refined as their XP counterparts.

Vista's new and potentially buggy, XP works well, easy choice.

Agreed, there is still a lot of software issues. Give it another year. I am.
Yes if you have the latest hardware it may help as in the case of mkuriger.

If I had my way I would have 1 PC just for editing photos.

Not me. I plugged in my Canon printer, Canon scanner, Canon camera, usb drives, PVR, etc with no issues.

Let's not let this turn in to a mac Fanboy love in. It's a question of XP or Vista, not mac.

i second everything he said.

And I third. Running Vista 64, CS2, CS3 both work fine, so does Lightroom.

I don't have the latest hardware, but my main pc is about 2 years old and my oldest pc is about 4 years old. both run fine in vista.

of course, they run fine in XP also. i just like vista because photoshop runs about 25% faster.

I have Vista Ultimate and XP MCE 2005 in dual boot config on both my laptop and my PC. I had a few teething problems early on but now Vista is just fine and it is my default OS on both machines.

The only time I boot to XP on the laptop is when I need to print, because HP won't release Vista drivers for my Bluetooth printer. That's an issue for HP, (and shame on them!) not Microsoft.

The only time I boot to XP on my PC is when I want to use Peerguardian, as it doesn't do anything useful under Vista. That's an issue for Methlabs, not Microsoft.

Lightroom 1.0 and 1.1 ran/run without problems on both machines.

That's the thing, the eye candy seemed to eat up all the RAM leaving no 'room' for actual program usage

Of course imagine how fast Win3.11forWorkgroups would run on a 2gb/Core2 machine

I have Vista-it came with my new computer that has over 2.5GHz processor. It is fast enough for my CS3 and PainterX. I have had no compatibility problems.

I would not, at this time, upgrade on an existing XP system. Give it a year or so for bill gates to get all the bugs out.

You're running CS2 in Vista? I heard reports all over the web that CS2 is not going to work in Vista and many are complaining about the forced upgrade to CS3 for Vista operatibility.

Can you please elaborate about your operating conditions for CS2 in Vista?

I had CS2 and vista... no problems. I love vista, it's a really solid platform. Most people complain because the early lack of drivers for hardware. As if it were microsofts fault. Microsoft puts out driver SDK's long before vista was released. Blame the hardware manafacturer for not making compatible drivers earlier.

I run vista on an older desktop, say 3 years old. And a newer laptop, duo core, and it runs everything fantastically.

btw, i run CS3 now...
