I want to put the 580EX on a light stand with umbrella and trigger it via a pair of Pocket Wizards. I bought the PW's but the flash cable included does not connect to the Canon flash and I'm confused about the choices online. Does anyone use this setup and can you tell me what cable or other item I need to make this work?

I use one of these to fire my 580ex remotely with my PW:

I think you can just use a regular synch cord with the new 580ex II. I could be wrong.

I just purchased the same deal as DWFotos - and it works great - actually bought three (one for each canon flash) so I can set them up tripods/lightstands

Pc sync male to mono miniplug. That connects the 580 to the PW.

Guys.. there's a less expensive option. I know I keep touting this and you're probably sick of it by now, but the Paramount bit isn't the only option for a PW to Canon adapter. http://www.flashzebra.com/wizardcables/hotshoe.shtml (external link)

I've been using that adapter for the last few weeks on location shoots and it's been flawless.

I should be getting some sort of kickback.. :D

I use a cheap Hama adapter, but I'm just not happy with the 580EX as an off-camera radio-slaved flash. It has a really irritating tendency to fall asleep if I don't keep it busy enough, and I'm always having to re-adjust the synch cord. I just need to get me more SB-25's, maybe an SB-28 or two, and Pocket Wizards to go with them. I guess the 580EX II would be comparable for off-camera usage, but those cost what, $300 more?

You can turn this off.

Try this:
C. Fn-14 set to 1 page 28 of manual (Auto-power Off function) 0=on, 1=off)

+1 to this. The Flash Zebra model works too, but isn't as beefy. I prefer the Paramount.

Do not bother with sleep Cf.

When using a 580ex with PW you just need to set the wireless switch to SLAVE. Then press the Mode button until the "M" on the LCD begins to blink. Mentioned on p. 43 of 580EX manual, but not clearly. The blinking M indicates "dumb" Manual mode. Slave will not let flash revert to rest after 90 sec as it does in the OFF position.
