Purchased a 5D a few months ago. After using it, I can't imagine what features an upgrade could have that would make me wait for it.

Exactly! The 5D mkII may be like the 30D is to the 20D.

No major improvement to get buyers to upgrade. Its a pretty solid camera.

even if a new replacement for 5d is out
there's still a need to wait for the firmware to b stable, like the current mk3
and the price to be stable as well.

Definitely get it now, I was playing the 'waiting' game and got sick of it. I just got mine and wished I got it earlier! 5D prices are dropping and you should be able to get a good deal. You won't be disappointed! :)

I've had the Mk III a couple of months now and I'm still not getting the quality and keeper percentage I did with my 20D. I'm extremely disappointed in the performance. I think two months is enough to determine that it's not me. I'm hoping it's a problem with my specific camera and am going to ship it to Canon for repair. Also my 20D krapped out on me just as I was making detailed comparison shots between the two cameras so it's in the shop at the moment awaiting word on its condition (the menus/buttons quit working, but it would still take pictures...weird).

In the mean time I've decided to buy the 5D, it should be here today and the Mk III is going home to Canon for repair.

5D is a fantastic camera. I'm blown away by the image quality. Hard to see how they can improve on it other than adding ISO 6400 capabilities and self cleaning sensor, and maybe the digic 3 chipset which would improve on the noise performance which is only bested by the 1DmkIII.

Well I would consider this.

The oldest Camera in Canons line up is the 1Ds Mk II. Canon is making it well known this is the 20th Anniversary for the EOS system. So chances are they will have an upgrade for thier flagship EOS camera.

The only competiton the 1Ds has is the 5D, I dont think Canon will release the 1Ds and the new 5D at the same time.

So if this fall brings the new 1Ds and say a 40D, you wont see an announcement on the 5D til Feb. And if its like th e origanal 5D it will be in the mid $3000 range and be very hard to get til late summmer.

As many have suggested, get 5D (new or used) or 1D Mk III. I do not think 5D Mk II will be announced this year for the following reasons:

1Ds Mk III should be announced before 5D Mk II. If 5D Mk II is announced first, and presumablly it would be better than the current 5D (say, 25% increase in pixel counts as the 1D Mk III did), that would make it compete with 1Ds Mk II.

Canon 1D Mk III/5D2, Sigma 50mm f/1.4, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX, Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX, Canon 85/1.8, Canon 100/2.8 IS macro, Canon 135/2, Sigma 150-500 OS, Canon 500 f/4 IS

Don't forget 14bit images for higher tonal range. It'll probably also have higher pixel count, for marketing, not a necessity.

Its anyones guess when Canon will build it, but IMO it will be a more significant upgrade than the 20d-30d.

14 bit, kick the direct print button out, improve AF point selection in 'grip' mode and i will purchase it instantly . I don't think i care for higher pixel count but obviously i wouldn't complain at all. I still think that considering the price 5D is the best canon's product so far.

Buy MKIII and rent 5D, hehe.
Good luck with any camera you will get, the important thing is that you will use it for what its made for, if you want fast then MKIII, if you want for something else [Studio, portraits] then i don't think you can find better than 5D or 1DsII in Canon DSRL line now.

I just got my 5D today and sent the Mk III to Canon for repair. Weather here is rainy, but I'm loving the shots I've been able to take with it! I'll shoot a lot this weekend and we'll how it works compared to my recent Mk III experience.
