I downloaded the recent local costco icc from drycreek and was playing with it. I noticed something interesting. The printer I personally own is an epson r2400.

With the costco icc loaded and in proofing mode, when I click the Preview button on and off it shows a dramatic difference in the pic (I shoot and PP in adobe rgb 1998 ). However, when I load the r2400 profile and do the same, the difference is negligable, almost non-existent.

What does this mean? Is the r2400 gamut larger than the fuji / noritsu printers?

Also, before clicking on and off using both profiles, I converted the pic working colorspace from adobe to sRGB. When I did so, I could hardly see a change. However, when previewing the two profiles as above, the costco profile seemed to change quite a bit less. I know the sRGB gamut is more narrow than 1998, but when I changed the working colorspace there was virtually no change which would probably indicate the pic gamut was within both colorspaces. If that is so, why would the preview change from the costco/sRGB be quite a bit less than the preview change between costco/1998? thanks, /Dan

Probabely, yes.

Have a read in the link from my sig (page 3). In the first post there are also quite a few links on softproofing.

One step ahead of you, Rene. Been doing research and your posts came up in a lot of "prints not matching" type posts with links. Been doing so much reading my brain is about to explode.

One thing I don't see posted. When in soft proofing view, I see people post that when they check the Simulate Paper Color mode, it changes only a little bit. Mine changes a lot, and I do not know why. When I click mine, a grey colorcast covers the image. So dark that I would equate it to a ND filter of about 1/2 stop. So dark I'm not sure if additional PP on the image can correct it. Darkest on the costco profile, still dark but not as much on the epson premium glossy profile, and even more on the ilford gallerie fine arts matte.

Colormanagement seems to do that ;)

On the proof looking vastly different from the original: (From one of Bruce Frasers' articles (external link)): "As a result, your first reaction when checking paper white may be that your image just died before your eyes. I've become accustomed to looking away from the monitor when I check Paper White so that I don't see the change happen."

1. Most Costco labs update their individual profiles once a year.
2. At mine, I once made a small change in a 2nd print & forgot to add the profile. I saw no difference. When I asked the lab guys, they said that they don't see any difference in their test prints without profiles, either.

Thanks. But I think you misunderstood my "poorly written to be brief" sentence. I didn't mean between costco now and back in the year 1998, I meant when softprofiling and switching between the costco icc and the adobe 1998 profile.

But it's interesting you bring that up. I was about to send a few different prints to costco for testing (things like rendering intent, black point compensation, etc.). I think I will also include two more test prints: 1 with sRGB only, one with adobe 1998 rgb only. /Dan
