The new server is much faster than before - nice upgrade!

I am having a small issue with the Rumors Forum. When I use the Back button to get out I get the page that says POTN is on a new server - no big deal, as I usually click on the POTN at the top anyway, and that works fine.

I was also having trouble with the Rumors Forum yesterday, after the new server was installed. If I clicked on it, I got the redirect page. I figured I could wait until the DNS change propagated, and by this morning I got in normally.

Again, this is not a show-stopper, since clicking the POTN logo works, but I thought I would pass it on.

Have Fun,

Rick

Rumors, despite the outward appearance, is actually a discrete messageboard, IIRC.

When Pekka was testing out the new forum I had gone into what I thought was the "test" Rumors forum and posted something stupid.

Only after posting did I find that I'd posted in the "Live" forum, instead. :o At first, I thought I'd done something stupid. Only after rechecking did I see that there was a redirect from the link in "test" to the real "live" boards. It would make sense to hear it was a board of its own.

I'm a PC lightweight - now give me some mainframe, and we can talk

I'm not sure what your response means and what I can do with it. My thoughts are that when you use the back button from the Rumors Forum, something in the configuration points to the TCP/IP address for the old server, and that is why we see the redirect page. As I said, clicking the POTN logo works fine, but I thought Pekka (or whoever) would want to handle this as part of the cleanup.

Have Fun,

Rick

Cleared your caches recently? Checked their sizes? Since Rumors is a separate messageboard, your "Back" button relies on having the previous page still in cache, and on the DNS for that link resolving correctly. Unless both those are true, the browser's going to request a new copy of the page. If your local DNS server has the old POTN address still hanging around, that's where you'll end up. If you haven't changed back from using the IP address to the standard URL, you might not realize where you are . . . As for the link working, the aliasing lets it pretend to be a request for another page on the same server, so requesting DNS resolution isn't necessary.

I've heard of caches with proxy servers, but I am a single PC on cable broadband. I have a wireless router, but if it has a cache (or if my PC has one) I don't know how to clear it. Can I do that with "Internet Options" in the "Tools" menu?

Have Fun,

Okay, I deleted the temporary files, and that seems to do it. Thanks, Jon.

Yeah - your browser has a cache too, to (usually) speed things up. As you're seeing, it sometimes backfires, and clearing it may solve various obscure problems.
