Is it just me or does the fit of the lens hood suck? It seems to be to snug going on and off. Especially when I take it on and off backwards for storage in my bag. It seems like it really binds up and have to twist to hard to get it in position. The two other hoods I have on different lenses turn real smooth but not this one. Is everyones the same way?

My 100-400 seems no different than the fit of my 70-200's (both 4 & 2.8) or any of my other lenses. I had it on and off several times this weekend for soccer on both days and it didn't seem unusual to me.

Just checked mine. Smooth, not a problem reversed or otherwise. It is a Canon ET-83C right?

I've had problems with mine as well . . . I find that I have to be more careful removing it or it comes mis-aligned on the threads. I think it's because it is massive and the plastic tends to bend a little when you grab it too firmly. Works better when I remove it with even pressure while it's lying on my lap.

The trick to installing or removing the lens hood on the 100-400L is to twist the lens hood from the base, not from the end of the hood. If you use the end of the hood it distorts the lens hood and causes problems. I hope this helps you as I had problems with the hood at first.

Makes sense, that's what I've been doing to mine. Good first post Dr :D

Mine has become so worn that it keeps falling off from being bumped. Of course, it's eight years old... I finally put some strips of gaffer's tape on the mating surfaces and that seems to have tightened it up.

Only time I had trouble with mine is when I muddled up the hood with the one from 24-70. Sheer incompetance as I found niether would fit properly..

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Mine used to be like this. I fixed this with a super small application of Silicon lube (pressure pack) applied to a clean rag. I then wiped the ridges on the hood with the cloth. Five second fix, well maybe if you have the lube nearby.

Mine works just fine for me and always has done. I don't do anything special with it. I generally hold it around the circumference (in my palm).

At the zoo, it's on and off all the time.

Mine did this and I used a small bit of dishwashing liquid on my fingertip to the mount of the lense then wiped any access off. This worked fine for me. If it drys out just do it again. Did mine about 6 months ago and it's still fine.

As long as it can rotate around and snap into place, it's fine. Better to be too firm than too loose.

I'll have to try one of these ideas, thanks.

True, but mine I can't do this ...............

...........cause it takes to much precise gripping and proper twisting.

Old fly fisherman's trick. Nose grease. When you mount the hood, wipe your index finger down the side of your nose. Then wipe the finger around the mount for the hood. You probably won't notice a difference the first time but after you have done it few times it will work much smoother.
