Over the weekend I was disappointed to find out my trusty 540EZ wasn't compatible with my new D30. Has anyone found a way around this? I really like the flash because I can also use it with my Canon EOS Elan 7.

Thanks,
T

I too had the 540EZ and was disapointed to learn about its incompatibility with the D30.

I did not go around it. Simply saved and bought the 550EX.

I thought about selling the 540EZ but in the end I simply decided to keep it and use it for backup and backlighting with a hot shoe/slave set up. Glad that I did.

Well, I asked Canon Technical Support and here is their reply:
"Thank you for your inquiry. I apologize for any inconveniences you may have experienced with your Canon camera.

The EOS D30/D60 can only use the 540EZ with the flash unit set to Manual. The EOS D30/D60 is designed to use the EX series of Speedlites, not the EZ.

Thank you for your interest in Canon. We look forward to assisting you in the future.

Sincerely,
Dan
Product Support Representative"

I got $220 for my 540ez on ebay and bought a 550ex(two actually). I have been very happy with it. The 550ex will give you a number of new options with your Elan, too. High speed sync, for example.

Obviously I can't guarantee any particular price on ebay, but I was happy. My 540 was in good condition but I had used it for years.

About using a second flash: I looked into it and found that the wired connection equipment connecting my 540 to a new 550 was so expensive, that in the end I sold the 540 and got another 550. The two can fire eachother wirelessly without the connection equipment expense, and ETTL handles the result beautifully.

Yep, thats what I am doing. Set my sites on a 550EX and selling the 540EZ on eBay. Currently, bidding is only at $140.00. I sure do hope to reach your magic $220 number. Check it out, it is like new. I bought it from a friend who is a press photographer for the Columbus Dispatch.

I don't want to get your hopes up overly high, but for most all of the photo equipment I have auctioned off, most of the bidding has been on the final day of the auction.
