Looks like Sigma likes Nikon owners more than it likes Canon owners:

heh, thank goodness. i was going to buy a sigma 17-70mm just earlier.

but i'm pretty sure sigma will release a HSM model for canon too, just later. cause the nikon market is more attractive now as these HSM models will suit the d40x.

It also works really well on a 400D or 30D :)

HSM would just give the 17-70 that extra little step up, and would have to make it the best crop camera walk around lens on the market.
Its already been proven in more than enough threads here that its optical and built quality are more than up to the job.

Damn mine is coming in the mail today... Oh well I can live without the HSM for now, or at least until its brought out in the Canon model, maybe trade it in some point later on.

Eh, for a moment, I stopped by this thread because I read it as 17-40. Naww, I have absolutely zero regrets about the magnificent 17-40. :p

I think a Canon HSM version will follow shortly. It makes no sense to do all the R&D and then not leverage it fully. I recall one other situation where a lens was first released for only one mount, but the other mounts followed shortly. Can't recall who it was or what lens it was.

Sigma more than has the technology to do this, as they have proven in the past. I figure it is just a matter of sorting out the nitty gritty integration details, setting up the production line and squashing whatever software/firmware bugs there may be. Kudos to them for getting HSM on more of their lenses. I have always felt that their standard zooms could really benefit from it, especially in terms of focusing precision. When you have shallow DOF at f/2.8, you NEED that critical focusing, so I'm glad to see it on their 18-50 f/2.8. Hope they fix the CA problem too, at the wide end.

24-70 with HSM would be nice. I bet it'd fix a lot of the focusing concerns.

For those unfamiliar with the numerous lens acronyms, HSM stands for Hyper Sonic Motor, (also known as Ultrasonic motor

apparently the writer does not know what an acronym is .... but that is nitpicking :D.

repost

and i don't think the HSM matters that much. the current 17-70 actually focuses pretty fast, but i agree that it's loud

Ok so I would happily swap my 17-70 for Canons Mini-vac, but there is no way I pay the difference in purchase cost.

She's a beauty alright, Mine has been able to track a race car passing me at well over 100mph about 6 meters away, so while it dosn't focus Canon L fast, its still pretty fast.

I think its fantastic. Every time Iv borrowed friend lenses with USM Iv always found myself using it. Usually on subjects that don't quite fit in 30Ds focus points and where the DOF is to shallow to focus recompose.

Canon, you'd better watch out, Sigma is coming.

Those that actually own this lens are smiling. :p

Just for the record - mine hasn't a speck of dust, and I'll put it up against anything that Sigma has.

I think they put it for Nikon first is because D40 and D40x does not have enough decent consumer end of zooms. It put in HSM to compensate D40 and D40x that does not have motor on their camera to drive the AF on the lens.

I believe Nikon also has decent lenses that does not have motor on the lens, thus cannot get AF for D40 and D40x. Like my friend got mad because I recommend him to get the 50 f/1.8 (nikon version) only to find it can only be used with manual focusing.

If they can me it for nikon mount, it should not be any problem for canon mount.. they already have the knowledge to do HSM with other lenses as well.. I think they are currently gauging the demand on the market, or even already start planning to change the production line.
