Just print it full frame and you'll have a white boarder around it. You could even add a black rectangle around it to mimick what allot of the documentary guys used to do to (larger neg carriers to show the actual edges of the neg) . I think it looks great. So what theres a white boarder its better than cropping or distorting the image.

This is a great solution, I rarely use standard sizes for my compositions, and thus make the "fix" with the Matting,. using actual mat board..

You suggest that one can use the option you outline to achieve the same thing when you don't want to make a custom mat... good idea.

Still, it loosk like it could use a crop off top and bottom to me in this case.

However, if he does that, he will loose some of the image which is contrary to his stated intention. Remember that the OP stated that he wanted the entire shot in an 8 x 10 ("I want the whole photo in 8 x 10", "this whole image in 8 x 10").

You are, in essence, telling him how to do what he said he did not want to do.

Rad

Never hurts to tell someone how to do things in another way.. or a better way.

I don't get it. If the aforementioned image is an uncropped version, can't the OP just print the jpeg by telling Costco what size(4X6, 8X10....etc) he wants? Did I miss something?

Elegant.

If it works for the OP's purpose, I think that is a great idea.

I must admit i don't have much experience when it comes to printing. Isn't it true the images come straight out of the camera can be printed in 4X6 or 8X 10 (fit perfectly) without cropping? No question is dumb question, right? :)

Standard DSLR image is 3:2 ratio so 8:10 would need cropping.

Ah ok. I just ran to grab my own Canon photo papers to verify. The box says 8.5 X 11. I'd mistaken it for 8X10 earlier. Now i get it. Thanks. :)

Canon being 2:3 can not put out a 8:10 print as that is a 4:5 ratio print. 4:6 though is a 2:3 ratio print so you get the whole thing.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

My experience with Costco has been that even if you are in the correct aspect ratio, will will still lose 3 or 4 percent on the perimeter of the shot. The bummer is that it is never even around the shot. The top edge may be fine, and the bottom noticeable shaved. (or vice versa).

If the you are in a non-standard aspect ratio, the will crop your image till it completely fills the frame. Lets say you want to print a pano on an 8 x 12. You are expecting to have white on the top and bottom that you will cut off at home. Well, surprise, they have zoomed in so that the top and bottom of your pano image fill the top and bottom of the paper, and the areas on the left and right are not printed at all! I learned this the hard way!

Yikes. Even if you tell them before hand it's ok to leave some white space at top/bottom, or left/right?

That would involve them being smarter than a printer. Ain't gonna happen. (And I know this from personal experience as I put in 15 years at Costco (Well, "Price Club" --> "Price Costco" --> "Costco").

When I have this situation, I open my canvas to a standard size, and drop the image onto that canvas, so now it is an 8 x 12 with my own white space at the top and bottom that is part of the image I send them.
