Not really a macro shot, as I had my 300mm on at the time.

Has anybody got any idea of what kind of ant it is? It was quite large, maybe about 10mm (3/8") or so.

Oh yes, I shot it in Namibia, not the UK

I thought - UK? - must be an ant mimic. Sorry no idea but interesting shot - abdomen reminds me of a Jumping spider.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I thought it would be a long-shot, but he(?) does look quite distinctive with his bronze head and thorax, and black and white hairy abdomen.

Can't help with ID but it looks like a cross between a spider and an ant.
Good find.

To me, it looks similar to the Camponotus fulvopilosus but not exactly.

Thanks for the leads guys.

I've just spent the last hour and a half trying to get a good positive ID, but to no avail.

I agree with you all, it looks very similar to Gordon's (Action_Man) link, but not identical. Some of the differences could be down to colour differences between the two pictures but...

I have discovered that the Yellow-haired Sugar Spider (Camponotus fulvopilosus) has a number of subspecies, so maybe that's the problem, but there's no pictures identifying the differences, and I can't understand the highly technical descriptions.

To the rest of you, thanks for your kind comments.
